What made pregnancy bearable?

I was going to make this a clicky poll, but there would be too many choices.  This might seem like a weird thread topic, but at 40 yo with a 10 and 12-YO, this will definitely be my last baby, and I was thinking as I was laying around in my supreme state of laziness today about what went better this time than other times (and worse, but I'm choosing to think positively today) and if it's worth sharing.  Looking at the randoms threads and remembering other pregnancies, I figured it's worth sharing, and out of curiosity, I'd love to hear what wisdom other's would share.

I have to say that last pregnancy my hips and back hurt a lot at the end.  I remember how uncomfortable sleeping was and rolling over in bed was the equivalent to climbing a mountain.  Not to say that I'm not uncomfortable in other ways, but I've had almost no hip pain, back pain, and don't really even wake up to roll over.  In the 10 years since my last pregnancy I became a personal trainer and a kettlebell instructor and I kept up with the KB's until a few weeks ago.  I'm certain that it has helped me to not be in pain.  There's one exercise (called a turkish get-up) that I'm pretty sure has saved me from feeling like rolling over or getting up from a chair is an epic feat.  If I were going to get pregnant again, I'd make sure I was going tons of them and through the pregnancy, too.

So, Ladies...what's gone RIGHT for your pregnancy?

Re: What made pregnancy bearable?

  • My first pregnancy (DD is 19 mos) I had GD. They diagnosed me with it (I failed the test by 1 point). This time around I passed the test and could eat all the sweets (I only have a sweet tooth when pregnant). It was especially nice being able to enjoy ice cream and froyo in the summer.
My last pregnancy my SPD was so bad I had to see a PT every week. This time I was able to manage my pelvic pain with exercises at home and my maternity belt. My pelvis didn't hurt as much this time around.

  • I wasn't near as sick this time around! I was sick with DD until about 6 months. W/ DD around 28 weeks I had to start going into the hospital for bi-weekly NST's which was such a pain. I still have to do NST's this time around, but I am now able to do it from my Dr's office. I'm proud to say that I am almost 38 weeks (Thursday) and have only been to the hospital one time!

We have also sold our house, and our new home is currently being built, so that has made time fly with this pregnancy! .. I'm ready to be done though ;)

  • I hope I don't jinx myself, but little to no heartburn.

  • Yoga and weekly massages in the third trimester helped a lot.

  • Apparently I'm a pregnancy snowflake, but thus far I have had no nausea, vomiting, swelling, pain, difficulty getting around, peeing in the middle of the night only once, etc....I feel like I won the pregnancy lottery in that regard.

On the flip side, I do have GD, though it's a bizarre form where I can eat bagels, ice cream, french fries, etc. as I please, but for a few weeks I was in a really bad place, losing weight, crying constantly, and basically refusing to eat.

5 cycles of "TTC" - 3 intentional, 2 not so intentional.  5 BFPs.  My rainbow arrived 10/15/14.

  • Not giving in to food restrictions. Only things I stopped having were raw oysters and hard alcohol. Everything else was fair game. I think if I'd abstained from the huge list you always see, I'd have been a lot more miserable.
  • My husband. He seriously rocks.
Seeing a behavioral therapist to validate my feelings and help me differentiate between normal pregnancy fears and hormones and unrealistic anxious thoughts.

  • I would second the mild summer, and my flexible job, where I'm not on my feet. My job is very stressful, but I was able to come in late, stay late, take long lunches, rearrange my constantly rescheduled Dr. appointments, all with relative ease since I don't "clock in" and one really has to cover for me if I need to take a day off. It still sucks having a stressful job while pregnant, but it could have been way worse. I truly feel for all you nurses, teachers, etc! I feel really blessed.
  • Not having a hot summer, getting to leave work a month before I'm due, and not having any sickness the entire time. Pregnancy winner! (So far - no jinxes)
  • Being self employed. I can't imagine having to show up at work with morning sickness or now when I'm always uncomfortable... Such a lifesaver.

  • I'm a hospital nurse and am SO thankful I was able to cut wAY back on working when I started to feel like hell and stop at 36 wks. I truly don't know what I would have done had I been in a situation where I had to work 3 13 hr very physically demanding shifts per week until now. My last few days at work were really rough physically with not being able to sit down and I think I would have cussed people out the last month! Thank heavens! And I've appreciated having the bump to keep me entertained with everyone's questions and support. :)
  • This pregnancy was a breeze compared to DS1. I was nauseous 24/7 from 7 weeks until birth. I had the worst heartburn ever, gained so much weight, had hip pain from 20 weeks, etc.
This time the heartburn has been fairly mild, pain just started recently, and the nausea thankfully was the "normal" 1st tri waves.

  • no headaches/vomiting for 9 months!  i get monthly hormonal migraines that make me sick to my stomach and restrict me to bed one day a month.  during both of my pregnancies these magically went away.  no morning sickness, either.  not looking forward to the headaches coming back after delivery.  i think it took a couple months last time but i'm really going to have to get them checked out and under control now that i'll have 2 kids to look after.

  • Zofran made 1st tri bearable because morning sickness was a mutha! But since then I've been blessed with a pretty smooth pregnancy. Tums has helped with the reflux and the adjustable base on our bed has been a godsend. Now if only I could find some relief from these swollen feet of mine!

  • Working from home and having awesome clients. My entire first trimester, I was pretty much a vomiting zombie. If they weren't so understanding and patient, I'd currently have the stress of being broke on top of all of this heartburn.
