The great Tan Debate

Not looking to be judged or critiqued for asking this; just straight up answers :)

What's Everyones view on tanning while pregnant? What's the actual facts on tanning while pregnant (if anyone knows the actual factoids) :)

:) I haven't tanned since i found out but am debaing it for the holidays .

Re: The great Tan Debate

  • I wouldn't tan when I'm not pregnant. The uv rays can cause skin cancer, and I myself dealt with skin cancer 10 years ago, it's no fun. I would think it wouldn't be safe while pregnant, our skin is sensitive anyway. I would call your OB and check. How about a spray tan? Bottle tan? Something that doesn't have any risk to the baby.
  • I love being tan, but I would not at all get in a tanning bed while pregnant.  My assumption is if hot tubs and long hot baths are not recommended, it would be the same for tanning since you do heat up not to mention the dangerous increase in skin cancer.  Not worth it in my book even if for vanity purposes I feel like I look better with a tan.

I did do some laying on the beach slathered in sun block while on vacation last month, but I cut that down to half the time I would normally spend working on my tan.

    All Welcome

  • I quit tanning as soon as I found out I was pregnant, I know what you're feeling with the holiday thing and I use a self tanning lotion that's not harmful to you or the fetus, I made sure with my doctor before using.
  • I would never. That is all.

I think the same would go with with tanning as would being in hot tub or hot bath, the baby would just get too hot. Among other things as many other women so "kindly" mentioned....…etc…
Also tanning is bad, but there are soooo many other things in this world that are just as bad for you. No need to be picking at this girls life choice to tan, when I'm sure (unless you are some god sent freaking angel) we all have done or do things just as bad. I know I have. I'm not afraid to admit that I'm not perfect.

  • There isn't really any "debate" about it. Even people who do tan can't deny the facts that it's not good for you. The only time I ever tanned was in high school right before a date dance that would show my weird tan lines from my softball uniform. This was back in the day when spray tans were more like carrot juice baths that were pure orange. You have so many other options now I would not even consider tanning in a bed to be one.
  • Is it safe to smoke crack while pregnant?
  • I used to be obsessed with tanning when I was in high school/college even though my grandpa passed away from skin cancer. I was young and naive and thought my skin looked better tan and I would stay beautiful forever. I started getting wrinkles on my forehead and age spots on my cheeks @ 25. If that wasn't horrifying enough, my uncle was diagnosed with malignant melanoma on his nose.
I now stay out of the sun at all costs.
If anyone ever sees me tan, it's a fake bake (spray tan).
I would not even consider that while pregnant because of chemicals let alone a tanning bed! [-(

  • Don't do it. I don't think anyone will tell you it's a good idea, especially while pregnant. Get a fake tan. That's what I plan to do.

  • You could go to the mall and have someone show you how to do your makeup with paler skin.
  • I say don't. Look into alternatives.

I can't see your screen name without thinking of the BC. Please tell me this significance so I can associate you with something else. :D
Lol it was my name before it was the name of a birth control pill.

  • We pregnant ladies look best pale! Also, so does everyone else. No tanning please.

I second the new makeup idea. You might be surprised how nice your basic skin tone looks with your eyes and hair.

  • Don't use a tanning bed unless you're striving to look like a leather belt. It's so bad for you pregnant or not. If you feel like you've got to have a tan, get a spray tan but refrain from even that when you're pregnant. Besides...didn't you get the memo? Pale is the new tan.

  • Stay away from cancer in a box, pregnant or otherwise. In fact, tanning salons have warnings posted about tanning while pregnant. If you want to know the real risks, Google is your friend. We are not Google. Go to a salon and get airbrushed, if you must. I have for special occasions.

My H has asked me not to get spray tanned. He thinks it's bad for you because you end up inhaling the chemicals. Thoughts? Someone want to put it in the google machine for me? My google finger is tired.

  • Is it safe to smoke crack while pregnant?

Not at all the same thing. Drug problems are nothing to joke around about.

Also, when not pregnant, tanning is your choice. I read that when you are pregnant skin is more sensitive to burning and also it inhibits absorption of folic acid, which i hope you know is essential for your baby's development. So no tanning while pregnant :(
  • This is not a debate. Tanning is dangerous and dumb. The end.
