Barium Swallow Test

Can anyone offer any insight on this?

Naomi has been gagging/chocking/throwing up any food with some chunks. It's been her Level 3 foods, so even though she's 11 months adjusted we're still on bottles and level 2 foods.

I called her ENT to see if it was due to her Laryngomalacia and he said no and suggested this test, so here we are and she's having it on Thursday.

Thanks for the suggestions on what to bring.  As of now, I haven't been told what to bring. Just when to stop feeding her and when to be at the hospital.

Should I bring the Level 3 food she is having issues with or do they provide that?

We just did this for my tiny guy with laryngomalacia.  No metal is allowed on your clothes--or they might have your older child change into a hospital gown.  Also, make sure everyone gets a shield--our nurse almost forgot to cover our baby's lower half.

ok! So is Laryngomalacia affecting how your guy eats? My ENT is saying no, but I feel in my gut it is.

How did the test go for you?

Well, my baby is one month old...but it only seems to affect how he eats.  He cannot really eat and breathe at the same time and has to stop and take breaths. I have read this is common in laryngomalacia babies.  So, yeah, it seems like it could definitely affect solid eating too...

The test was short and painless. Your baby eats and you can see where the food goes, which is useful because if it is going to the lungs, that's really bad.  We didn't see anything going to the lungs, which meant we could continue to mouth-feed.  I'm not sure what else you can tell from this test.  I did once have an upper GI with barium, and they didn't tell me in advance, but that test took abut 5 hours because you have to wait for the barium to go through your system.  If you are doing this (and I don't think you are), be prepared with lots of entertainment.

Well she is not a fan of thicker textures (which I knew). It isn't her Laryngomalacia.  As soon as they gave her a yogurt consistency and it hit the back of her tongue she started gagging.

She said she is recommending speech therapy to help her with eating.  Can anyone give me any insight on that?
