Working Moms

single mom. second shift. pregnant #2

Hi ladies.
Just looking for advice and knowledge from those of you who are also working.
I am a single mom, my DD is 18months old and I work second shift 40hr weeks. So far this has worked great but now I am 12w pregnant with #2 and have been stressing over whether I should keep my second shift job after LO is born or if first shift would be easier and instead of a babysitter and back up babysitters look into daycares for both of my LOs. I also plan in bf and pumping... any advice from personal experiences or insight would be helpful.
Thanks!

  • I work a part-time evening shift and then have a part-time (salaried) day position. The evening position works well because my husband has to be gone early in the mornings and the preschool doesn't open until 8:30am so one of us has to be flexible. I don't know how that would work being single but I don't know your care schedule either.

  • On one hand it will be easier to have a daycare and not worry about about back-ups, etc. On the other hand you'll still need back-ups - kids get sick and two kids get sick twice as much. Will you always be able to take off work to care for them or will you need back-up care? Also the cost is a factor, daycares are cheaper per head and often offer sibling discount but nanny is usually cheaper for multiple kids. I would also consider how much time you get with the kids if you are on 1st vs. 2nd shift. I.e. is part of your shift when the kids are already asleep? On one hand that's nice - you get more awake time together. On the other hand, are you going to be super sleep deprived?
    Good luck with the decision!
