Thyroid question-loss mentioned

Ever since my miscarriage (now 2 months ago), I've been losing hair in the same way I did after I had DS. Like a lot coming out when I run my hands through my hair. I've also put on like 7 pounds fairly quickly, but I was also horfing down desserts like it was my job so I don't know.

I've convinced myself I have hypothyroidism that either caused my miscarriage or was kick-started by my miscarriage. Now I'm terrified that I'll continue to have miscarriages because of this. I have almost no medical knowledge to back this up, but I am well-versed in Google.

Anyone have a thyroid condition and have any insight? Anyone have similar issues following a loss? I have no primary care doc, but I guess I could call my OB. I just don't know if I'm way off base.

Are you tired constantly no matter how much sleep you get, can't stand cold, constipated? Those were my biggest symptoms put together with sudden weight gain and inability to lose weight. It never hurts to ask your doctor for a blood test. Just make sure they to t4 and tsh when they do it as one can come up normal and the other abnormal.

Eta: my thyroid went even more out of whack after my loss. My symptoms stayed the same but my levels were way off. I get my levels tested every 6 weeks now and have had a healthy baby girl and have another baby on the way since then!

  • Yes to all three! But I've pretty much been that way my whole life, those things aren't new like the hair loss and weight gain.

I guess I'll call the OB, but I always feel weird telling a doctor what I think is wrong. I'm a really passive patient and I hate that about myself.

  • I can tell you more in a few days, but my tsh level just came back insanely high. Once I know more about treatment and all that, I'll post here or message you privately, whichever you prefer.

My OB did ordered the test yesterday afternoon.

I don't have any experience with a loss, & hugs to you for that, but I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when pregnant with DS. I've been on medication for it ever since & have had 2 successful pregnancies since. If you're concerned ask your doctor to be tested.

ETA: my thyroid level is something they check during the 1st baby check up blood work appointment, so I am sure your OB would do it for you
  • It can't hurt to get it checked out. I have Hashimoto's (auto-immune hypothyroidism). When my thyroid levels are out of whack I am exhausted, I get headaches, I have cold intolerance and severely dry itchy skin. I was hypothyroid prior to having kids and my levels were controlled very well during pregnancy with meds, but it did get hard to control after giving birth.

It's a simple blood test. And like pp said, tsh and t4 levels need to be tested.

Also, any type of hormonal birth control can effect the test results, just an aside.
  • Your OB should be able to at least run bloodwork to check your thyroid.  It sounds like there may be something going on with your thyroid.

  • Thanks everyone, I'm definitely going to try to get blood work done. @RondackHiker‌, I know this seems like a stupid question but did you just call the doctor and say "I think I have thyroid issues?"

  • I'm late, so everything I was going to say has been said. But yes, it sounds like your thyroid. Once you get that regulated with medicine, you can TTC again and maybe not have another miscarriage (if it was due to your thyroid).

I would just call your PCP or OB and mention your symptoms and that you want to have your TSH and T4 checked. Good luck!

  • I discovered I was severely hypothyroid after my loss many years ago. It was taking us a lot longer to get pregnant than it had the first time, and I noticed my luteal phases were crazy long. Way longer than when I charted before getting pregnant w/my first. I will never know if the condition caused my early loss (9ish weeks), but I was told that if I hadn't gotten treated I most certainly would have lost my subsequent pregnancy. I found out I was hypo the day I found out I was preg again, so I got meds right away & had a healthy pregnancy. My doc said it's not uncommon for women to become hypo after a pregnancy. I would def. get tested, it can't hurt.

    Yup!

  • So my OB won't do it. They gave me several GP's numbers, but now I have to go to court so I don't know when I can call them. I wanted it done soon, but it doesn't look like that will happen.

    Ugh. I'm sorry.

I've been in and out of the ob for my PPD/PPA, which can be caused by thyroid issues, so maybe that's why? I just called and said I'd never had it checked and would like to.

They brought me in the back for the whole "are you going to hurt yourself" routine again and then drew my blood.

  • The gp they referred me to can't see me until 10/30. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhh.

    Fuck.

I wonder if an urgent care place could order the blood draw?

Do you have any doctor friends who'd order it for you?

I'm annoyed at your OB. Thyroid issues are really common in women after birth or loss. It's a freaking blood test. Order it and refer depending on the results.

Nope. I actually just contacted one the other day to see for a co-worker. OP, call your PCP. They can do the bloodwork, and send you to an endo if needed.

  • It was the receptionist who said I needed to go to a GP. I didn't even get to a doc or nurse.

Does your OB have a line where you can call and leave a message for the nurse instead of going through the receptionist? I would think since this is TTC related, they would help you.
I agree, I'd leave a message for the nurse. The receptionist shouldn't tell you it's not OB related when it clearly is since you're TTC.

And sorry, I didn't catch the no PCP part.

  • I got an appointment with another GP my OB recommended on Friday but I have a trial set Friday and the defense attorney said he thinks his client won't settle. So I called back and got one Monday which is ok I guess.

    I might POAS tomorrow morning.
