Done w/ helmet

Had our 13 week scan Thursday and M's head didn't grow much since the last scan 6 weeks ago. His plagio went from 13.1 initially, 8.6 last scan to 8.3 Thursday. We were really hoping to get in the "normal' range of <6, but after a long talk with the orthotist we decided to call it quits. He said the growth at this point as slowed enough that even if we do another 4-6 weeks, the difference would be minimal. He assured me that they do not see any regressions at this age and that it will continue to improve naturally.

As he said, if these had been our measurements to start with we wouldn't be considering it at all. My only disappointment is that for the money I would have liked to have gotten that last bit, but I don't want to do another 3 months over a couple millimeters. And we couldn't ever get it to stop migrating to the high side, so even if we did more I don't think we'd get quite straight anyway.

Here's our before and two weeks ago. Got to get a final "after" pic.

Re: Done w/ helmet

  • His head looks really good. I'm sorry the results aren't what you wanted though. Happy helmet graduation M!

  • Don't mean to sound unhappy with the result. I'm glad we did it and definitely think it was with every penny, just a bummer to not quite get to "normal".

  • Oh no. I understand. Going into it they make you think it will definitely change everything and it isn't cheap.
  • Helmet is still sitting on the counter. I can't bring myself to throw away the $3k piece of equipment just yet, lol

  • Lol after all this helmet talk has anyone looked at their own face/head like hmmmm that's not quite symmetrical.
  • Congrats! I am convinced that we have started the helmet way too late and will hardly see a difference at all at the end of the first 12 weeks, so I'd be encouraged if we can get close like this! Glad to hear you're happy. :)

  • @missmeegs I thought of you after I posted this and really hoped that it wouldn't discourage you in any way. As you know, growth comes in random spurts, so we could have seen a big jump in numbers in another 4 weeks. It's just so unpredictable! There's a plagio board over on Baby Center with lots of folks who started later and got great results pretty quickly, and a fair number that had to go a bit longer, but I've not seen anyone say "I wish we hadn't done this" or "this was a waste of time". If we hadn't been satisfied already with where we had gotten, it really would not have been a big deal at all to keep going.

How's it going, by the way? Sleep any better?

  • Thanks, that is encouraging! I should seek that board out...

Well we had our first adjustment Friday, after not wearing the helmet at night for two nights due to a fever and then a rash breaking out (oy). The orthotist told us to keep him out of it entirely until his rash cleared up. The rash was viral, he had a stomach virus it turns out. Saw the pedi Friday and they echoed the sentiments, so today was the first rash free day he went back into the helmet! Woof what a stressful journey so far--ten nights since getting the helmet and he only slept in it entirely for two and partially for four. The other four he didn't wear it at all.

But! He went down in it easily tonight and it's after midnight and I'm praying he keeps it up and has a great night. She made some adjustments so maybe it's more comfortable for him?

  • Here's hoping! He slept straight through until 645--I think we finally hit the temperature sweet spot too because this was the first morning he didn't have cold hands when he woke up, and he wasn't sweaty at all when I took off the helmet to get him dressed. Victory! For now....hehe.
