Infertility

is it the problem?

My boyfriend is epileptic and diabetic ..... and were both on the heavy side... is all of this the problem?

Re: is it the problem?

  • What did your doctor say? Are you seeing an re? Do you know if you're diagnosed with anything besides being overweight (asking about you, not DH)?
I'm not really positive either what you're asking if "it's a problem" for? Having a baby is what I am assuming, so I'll just go with that. It could be a problem, might not. I've known morbidly obese people that became pregnant and I know people who couldn't because they were heavy, but a lot of times those cases included other problems such as PCOS. We'd really need more details to hep you out.

  • You would need testing to determine what the problem is. If you've been trying for a year, or months if you're over 35, you'll want to see an RE. GL.

    I am overweight: a little over 5'8"...190lbs....
And I'm starting to think I have a Luteal Phase defect. At my heaviest, 230, I had PCOS. After losing weight, my body corrected itself and periods regulated. But, hormones are still a little low. I'm also 37 years old.

My L phase is 11 days---even though my cycle is a regular 29. I'm going to an RE next week. It should be above 12. Maybe they can help? I dunno. Losing weight changed my life, though, and I hope I'm on the track to lose more. I've kept it off for 3 years. Weight messes with your hormones and ability to carry successfully. (In some people anyway)

  • @verdongirl - Have you had your thyroid tested? An 11 day LP isn't necessarily a problem, but you should get your progesterone checked in any case if it's a regular thing. PCOS is closely associated with hypothyroidism, and being hypothyroid can cause LPD. Being overweight doesn't necessarily cause annovulation, it's more that the issues causing the annovulation can cause weight gain as well.

I noticed your signature says that you just started trying last month, but you're seeing an RE next week? Is there another issue that's causing you to go straight to an RE? Just curious, because I don't recognize your name :) I've been on vacation for a couple of weeks though, so I'm out of the loop!

@tptbabe: I'm new. ;) Thanks for the great feedback. I'm learning so much...I've been hanging out on the TTC 35+ board for about a week. My ears perked up only because of the weight issue. There don't seem to be many boards that specifically discuss weight.

We started TTC two months ago, but not really charting with OPK or temping till this cycle. I haven't been diagnosed with infertility yet. (So, not regularly posting on this board) But, fam doc is sending us straight to an RE/Fertility Clinic that works with the HMO to run initial tests? Maybe because of our age...

    Me:
I'm 37 and suffered a chem pregnancy once when I was much heavier. But, other than that, I haven't had any major issues since my weight loss. One program (Pink Pad) said my LP was 12. Ovia said it was 11. I have no clue how to tell. I think you are right about them needing to run a progesterone check. I was going to enquire about Flaxseed and Vitex to prolong the phase?

    DH:
The hubs is still heavy (BMI 40) so we just want to do an SA and make sure he's okay. We did an over the counter test from Walgreens and it checked out positive/normal a month ago, but negative as of late.

  • @verdongirl - Honestly, I wouldn't be worried about anything just yet. With just one cycle having an 11 day LP, that's completely within the range of normal. It's only when it's an ongoing issue that you would be concerned, especially if you're just coming off of hormonal birth control :) It doesn't hurt to get your TSH tested at your annual, but it's pretty early to be thinking about testing just yet! It's very involved and can be extremely expensive, especially if you don't have IF coverage. (Standard for IF testing is 6 months of TTC if you're over 35.) I wouldn't mess around with herbs without having testing done first and meeting with a Naturopathic Doctor either. Without proper testing, it can do more harm than good. You might be taking the wrong thing, or at the wrong time, etc. (I'm a huge proponent of TCM, but you have to be careful that you're not messing with something. Just like conventional medicine, you wouldn't take it without a doctors prescription or testing, right? :) )

I haven't used the at-home kit (we don't get them up here), but I think all it tells you is count, correct? My hubby has a high BMI too (37), but his MFI is caused by liver disease, so it's not related.

I will randomly post on other boards all the time! I like to look around and see what's going on. There's a wealth of information on here, but it's tough to keep up with more than one board regularly! (And I've even been away from this one for the last couple weeks.) Hopefully you find a place that's a good fit for you :)
