She's hip to our tricks

DD has her 2nd ear infection in a month (first one was left ear, this is right ear).  She had gotten used to the amoxicillin with the first ear infection, it was bubblegum flavor I think, and she would take it from the syringe no problem.  This time around the doc decided to give her something stronger since the infection looked worse so it's amoxicillin with clav (or something like that) and I think it's orange cream flavored.  DD is not a fan.  I started hiding it in her yogurt and oatmeal and that worked for the first 4.5 days.  Last night she practically refused to eat what I gave her with the meds mixed in but I managed to get a bit in her.  This morning she wasn't having it either.  We still have 5 more days of antibiotic and I want to make sure we get the infection cleared up completely so we don't wind up back at the doctor in 2 weeks for another ear infection.

Any tips/trick for getting your LO to take their meds?  She lets me do the eardrops with no problem but the antibiotic she won't have any part of and I can't see myself force feeding her.

  • I would have your husband hold her down while you put the syringe in her mouth.  This is how we have to brush DD's teeth sometimes.  It sucks, but it's non negotiable and you only have to do it for 5 more days.

    this..antibiotics are a non-negotiable!
Agree.  Have a drink of milk or even a juice or something ready for her when she's done but I'd force her to take it.
  • I'm with everyone else that you need to get the antibiotics in her so do what you need to do. I've also seen on some news show that if you give them the medicine and then blow just a puff of air in their face it makes them swallow so they can't spit the medicine out. Just a thought
  • We just went through this. If we let her hold the medicine dropper in her mouth herself then she would swallow the meds as we pushed them in. If she swallowed all of it without a fight she got a sticker.

We put meds in a small amount of milk. He always drinks his milk so it's an easy way to deal with it.
I wound up doing this last night and it worked.  I made sure she didn't see me putting the meds in the sippy cup with the milk and she drank practically all of it.  I used this trick again this morning.  I can't wait until this is over.

Yup.  We had to hold our son down after his tonsillectomy to administer the painkillers.  They tasted awful and he hated it.  It sucked, but it was for his own good.
  • DS had a ton of ear infections and has tubes now, but he caught onto all of my tricks too.  We went through several methods.  At first, he would just take it out of the syringe.  Then he started refusing the syringe, so we would hold him down.  Then he started spitting it out.  Next, we started putting the antibiotics in a little medicine cup, mixing a tiny bit of juice in it, and letting him drink it with a straw.  Then he stopped doing that, so the last time he had antibiotics, I ended up just putting it in the medicine cup and letting him drink it himself (with my help to make sure he didn't spill it).  That was a fight part of the time, but most of the time it worked.
