One bedroom apartment?

we signed a lease for a one bedroom apartment and then two months later found out we were pregnant.. So obviously we will be stuck in here when the baby comes.. Been trying to figure out how I could set up a nursery area in the corner of our bedroom, just nervous it's going to be so cramped in here! Funny thing is we were looking at the two bedroom but we thought the one had plenty of room for the two of us... Haha! Anyways, anyone else doing this or have some advice?

Re: One bedroom apartment?

  • We have a 3 bedroom, because of the age difference between my older kids  (15 & 8)they aren't supposed to share rooms, so the baby's (23 months) crib in our room. He started in a PNP beside my bed and then moved to his crib on the other side of the room. There is no way we will be able to fit twins in this house. I have no idea what we are going to do then.

  • I'd ask to see if you can get out of it since you are pregnant. I did that with my last place.

  • I'm in the same boat.  We signed our lease as of August 1st.  I'm going to talk to the office in a few months and if they say no then we'll make due with the space until we can move.  I'm not looking forward to the added cost of a two bedroom either.  It's about $300 more a month.

  • @TeacherMom2015‌ that is a lot to be paying for one more bedroom. Luckily ours Is only $100 more to switch. I just contacted them and they said that we could switch before our lease is up but it would be a $350 fee or we could wait and not pay any fee at all. So we are deciding what would be best... Move before baby comes.. Or after? Haha
Thank you @maggiet19 I messaged them after you said that! Didn't think to ask about switching before (:

I remember another mom asking this question. They only had a flat and were moving out 3 months after baby. This was a suggestion by another mom. You put the bassinet in an out of the way corner and can attempt to reduce noise and movement by using a room divider.

  • We have a one bedroom. We're planning on using a storage closet (its a decent size) for the babies clothes and diaper changing table. I found a lot of good ideas on pintrest. We'll be moving when the baby is about 4 months old.

ours are about that much more a month, if not more. It's crazy

  • One of my friends just sent me a link for an awesome idea! Instead of have a big crib, there are little side cribs that go right next to your bed. They can sleep in it until 6 months. Saves room until we can move into somewhere bigger! Our bedroom isn't very big. So I might just do this!

  • We just signed a lease today for a new apartment. Baby will not be getting her own room though! We will make do with squeezing the baby stuff in amongst our things. By the time out lease is up, we will probably be ready for another bedroom!
  • We lived in a studio with DS until he was 14 months. We converted a closet. And made a nook. In NYC you just "make it work" Tim Gunn style. Plus it's nice to not have to walk far to get baby/ get to the kitchen etc. Small and simple for us!

Also you don't need all the crap "they say" you need, swings bouncers high chairs excersaucers jumperoos. Get hand me downs, that stuff takes up so much space and baby will pretty much be in your arms the whole time.

  • My first apartment was a studio. No doors or walls to divide. Could litterly walk in and see someone in bed or taking a shit. Me, My DH and son lived squished in their for 6 months when he was first born and it actually worked fine! He could be in his crib but still close to me and also the apartment being SO small was easy to clean! Now we have a two bedroom apartment finally and it is wonderful. :)
  • Also I never had a crib for DS we used a pack N play with extra padded insert! Took up way less space. ;)
  • We lived in a two bedroom apartment when DD was born but she was in our room for 6 months. RnP for 4 then the PnP for another 2. So to me, this sounds like no big deal. Haha. New baby will be in our room for 6 months as well even in our 3 bedroom house.

They say room sharing (not bed sharing) can lower the risk of sids in the first 6 months.

Personally, I'd get in sooner rather than later. Moving with a baby is a pain in the ass.

  • We are in a 2 bedroom and when DD2 was born we bought a mini pack'n'play (our place has really narrow doors) and rolled it between our bedroom (naps) and the living room (overnight) until she was sleeping well enough to join her older sister in the 2nd bedroom.  It wasn't ideal but it worked! Now that we're expecting #3 we're definitely going to have to move...not looking forward to that process at all!!!!

Also, I think a previous poster mentioned it, but often as long as a 2 bedroom is available and it's the same complex, management will usually let you move, you just may need to start the 1 year lease over again but as long as you plan on staying for awhile that wouldn't be an issue.  It's worth asking!
  • Most people keep the baby in their room for awhile at first, anyway. DD didn't move to her own room until she was 5 months old, she slept in a PnP by my side of the bed. We didn't even use her pretty room for much, for months.

  • DH and I are also in a 1bd, 1 bth apt. We're stuck in our lease and can't afford to upgrade to 2 bd, so we're focusing on 'travel' versions of items to save space (no extra storage) and more multi functional use.
  • If there's anything truly useful I learned in all those contracts classes in law school, it's this: Contracts can *always* be modified by the agreement of both parties, and it *never* hurts to ask. Worst thing that can happen is your landlord holds you to the lease.

Another option is this -- assuming there's no part of your lease forbidding it, you might consider subletting to someone you trust.

Lastly, I know a bunch of crunchy granola moms who are passionate about co-sleeping! If that's your thing, you might not need room for extra furniture at all.

  • We just signed a 14 month lease on our 1 bedroom apartment and baby will be about 6 months old when we move. Our bedroom is pretty big so we'll just have to do some rearranging to fit in all of babies things. We decided staying here would be fine and it would help us save a little money before we upgrade to a bigger place.
  • Our house is a 3-bedroom, but two of them are downstairs, which is under construction. Baby will be in our room, and I see no problem with it. It is a fairly large room, so we will probably get a screen like PP mentioned. I figure you will make it work with whatever you're given. Good luck!
  • We are currently living with my parents while we build our new house. This pregnancy was a complete surprise bc we didn't think we'd be able to get pregnant without treatment. Anyway, our house won't be done until June or July, so we're gonna have to make due. We are in a 12x12 bedroom with a king bed and not much room for anything else. My stepdaughters are in the room across from us and it's bursting at the seams. I have no idea what we are going to do and I'm not going to worry about it until we get closer to the due date. No need to stress about it at the moment.
