Business Trips - Question on how to plan when baby comes

Hi all, I'm a first time mom and trying to figure out how to arrange my schedule once the baby comes.  I take a 3 day trip once or twice a month in my current job; I really enjoy the trips but I don't know how it will be to travel for work once the baby comes.  In the next week or so, I'll sit down with my boss and tell him I'm expecting - I also think if I no longer want to travel when the baby comes, that I could ask him to adjust my work so I am in the office full time.  I'm not sure if I want to do that or not.  Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone on here had experience taking business trips when baby was still pretty little and if you recommended trying to avoid that situation or if it was manageable.  Thanks all for your advice and sharing your experience.

Re: Business Trips - Question on how to plan when baby comes

  • I don't have any experience with this- this will be my first pregnancy- but I also travel a lot in my position and am in a similar situation.

I am planning on looking at the travel schedule and identifying which trips are essential for my presence, and which I could train a member of my team to do. I'll then pitch that to my boss. I am hoping it has the added benefit of preparing others on my team for more responsibility/growth.

    Good luck!

  • I second the breast feeding scenario. There's no way I could leave my 3 month old (assuming you have 12 weeks of leave) for days.

  • I travel quite a but for work. The pumping is extremely tough. Little things like finding a clean, private and comfortable place to pump can be much harder than expected. If you hope to keep your milk you also have to hunt down refrigerators at work and hotels. Speaking from experience it is possible but not easy. Somehow I managed to pull off a year of breast feeding! I would definitely prioritize your trips and skip the nonessential road time. You will want as much time at home with your LO as possible! Best of luck to you! :)
  • Thanks all for your feedback and advice. Really appreciate it!
  • I had a job that took me on the road in my first pregnancy. I managed it throughout my pregnancy, but I had no plans to continue once our little girl arrived. I just couldn't be away from her overnight, even returning to work I missed her throughout the day, and couldn't wait to finish and get home.
I made plans while pregnant with my company to change my job, so upon returning after maternity I walked into a new position.
