Estimated large baby, ouch!

I had my sonogram today since I'm past due to make sure we are ok to hold out till my induction sat. They said it looks like she is 9lbs give or take a pound! I realize they can be off but you should have seen my jaw hit the floor and and I said ooohhhh shhhhiiittt. It's hilarious too bc everyone keeps telling me how tiny my belly looks ha. My husband was a 10 pounder and late too. I told him if he hadn't gotten me a push present he had better get on it. Lol Ouch! Hoping their estimate is way off. When they say every pregnancy is different that couldn't be more true! My son was only 7 lbs, he came on his due date and within 6hrs! This little one has been a totally different story.

I feel like everyone's estimate is always 1-2lbs MORE than their actual birth weight. Fingers crossed this is the case! I have the same appt tomorrow--my induction is scheduled for Friday.

  • I think your baby will be closer to 8lbs if your last was 7lbs.
  • I used to think that those estimates were always off until my co-worker just gave birth to a 10 lber - the estimate was right on target! They estimated my DD to be about 2 lbs larger than she actually was.

  • Ultrasounds can be SO off. I recover scheduled primary and repeat c-sections for suspected "macrosomia (aka large baby) and these babies are estimated at 10 lbs and come out and are 7 lbs 6 oz for example. I don't trust them at all. And I feel it robs the mothers of a chance at a vaginal birth.
  • Every week I ask whichever ob I'm seeing for an estimate even though I KNOW it means nothing, cervical checks also fall in this category and I don't receive those because I dot want to risk triggering labor. The size guesstimate is just for fun but the answer I get every time is "it doesn't matter". A week ago however my favorite doctor told me high 7's maybe 8 but I have an u/a scheduled for Thursday since I'll be overdue and I really hope they can tell me more about his size I'd want to mentally prepare to push out a 9lber as a ftm. I was 9lbs as was my fiancé.
  • they thought my little guy would be over 9lbs easily. he was 5 days early, but was 8lbs 4.1 oz. he was really short so he's still a chunky guy :)

  • Pushing my 9 lber was easier and shorter than my 8 lber. Where the weight is distributed can make a huge (pardon the pun) difference.
  • Try not to worry. They told us DD was big and I was terrified. She did end up being close to 9 pounds at birth, but she was born 4 hours after my first contraction med-free.  So my opinion, size on its own isn't something to stress about too much.  Good luck!
