Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Visiting work

Hey Ladies, I work as a special education teacher. I would like to bring my son in to visit my co-workers which would be in a school. How old do you think he should be before we go in? I'm not going to let any students hold or touch him, but I may let a select few other adults hold him. Should I wait until after his first round of two month vaccinations? He's 4 weeks on Thursday, I was thinking of waiting until November when he'll be about 8 weeks. Thoughts? Experience? Advice? TIA!

Re: Visiting work

  • My LO just turned 8 weeks, not shots yet and she's been in to work a couple times. She stayed in the stroller and no one touched her. Everyone was very respectful and still got to coo over her. Go for it! :)

  • I also work in a school. I took DD in at about 5/6 weeks. She was in her car seat/stroller so no one held her, but they could look and ogle as much as they liked :)
  • I ahve't taken him to my school, but I've taken him just about everywhere else.  As long as no one sick breathes all over him/her. You should be fine.  Mine is one months old and I did the same with my 18 month old.

  • I brought the little guy in, everyone kept their hands to themselves without being asked!
  • I work with some strange women and while some are okay and some aren't....I chose to not bring the babies in because you never know what some of them will do. One already told me she was going strip off socks because she loves feet.

So..if you're comfortable with your coworkers....go for it.

  • I brought mine in at five weeks. I went through the back door of one of the offices up front, to avoid the clinic. People were very good about washing their hands or not coming in the office if they weren't well. I went and saw my class but without him. Didn't want first grade germs to get to him! :)

  • After 5 weeks, my baby and I visited my workplace weekly but he wasn't held by anyone until the last couple of visits.  (It was more fun than calling in to report to my boss and all my coworkers loved to see the baby.)  Anyone who was feeling ill had the common decency to not come near him. YMMV depending on your coworkers.  He didn't get his 2 month shots till just a couple days before I went back to work.

  • I'm teacher too and I'm waiting, especially with this enterovirus. Ick. I asked my ped and he said to wait. My LO is 9 weeks. I say do what you feel comfortable with. (My school is also low income and students aren't super clean . . . .)
  • I would wait until they are at least 8 weeks because if baby gets sick before then it's almost always a trip to the ER with a spinal tap from what I was told - not worth it IMO.

  • I work in a middle and high school, and I brought my first in when he was about 5 weeks old. He was in the stroller, and the kids were very respectful- they looked, but didn't touch, and a couple even asked if they could take his picture to show their parents. The adults were less so- several people reaching in to touch his face and hands, etc. I think it depends on your co-workers. My second is due in a couple of weeks, and I'll probably bring him or her in after the holidays, but maybe wear the baby so that nobody touches, since it'll be flu season.

    Good luck!

  • I took LO in at about 6 weeks and let anyone who wanted to hold him. I don't have any concerns about my coworkers health/cleanliness though. Everyone just used hand sanitizer before they held LO, and a couple people who said they were sniffly declined to hold him. LO didn't get sick or anything.

If you are in an area that's had Pertussis outbreaks I may wait until a week or two after the first shots, but otherwise I would not worry.
