2.5 wk old eats and cries all day

My little girl who is 2.5 wks old sleeps pretty well at nights thankfully but days are a disaster. She'll eat and cry almost all day, not sleep. It's exhausting as it requires constant attention to feeding her and attempting to soothe her. The lack of daytime naps has really thrown me as I expected them thought they were normal for newborns. I've been tracking her feeds and sleeps and she avg about 13hrs sleep a day mostly nights.

A friend suggested trying some gas drops which dh is getting now. I am bf, supply is good and she's gaining weight plenty of wet diapers. Am I alone here, any suggestions?

Re: 2.5 wk old eats and cries all day

  • Has she been like this constant since birth or did it just start?

  • Does she spit up frequently? How's her poops? When she cries is she arching and stiffening?
  • This happens for us like every other day the past week or so... Have you tried taking a walk with her in a carrier? My LO falls asleep any time she's in the carrier and then when I get back I move her slowly into a bouncer hoping she doesn't wake up.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. She's been like this since we brought her home. She doesn't spit up much and her poops seem normal. She passes gas when she does poop. I have a ktan and ergo carrier tried the ktan twice first time went well except it hurt my c section tummy second time she screamed need to get better at putting it on. Haven't tried the ergo it seems so big. Walking her does help and she enjoys being outside.

  • do you try swaddling?  Ds 2 will not fall asleep unless he is swaddled, so he will start crying from being tired and once we swaddle and bounce for a little bit he will then sleep.

  • If you want to try a new stimulation, I highly recommend a playmat if you don't have one already. My LO enjoys her and looking at the hanging toys, but she will cry if she's actually hungry.

  • We swaddle at night and that helps so should try that during day. Ill pull out the activity mat and get to using the stroller!

  • Sounds a lot like what we've been dealing with, only it happens at night! He eats and sleeps great during the day, but when evening rolls around, he gets super fussy after each feed and it takes almost an hour to soothe and get him back to sleep. I think gas might be the culprit (he's bottle-fed and tends to gulp down his food), but I don't know why it's worse at night. It's so frustrating!
  • You might ask your pediatrician, but sounds like colic to me. Colicky babies usually need to be held more often and, unfortunately, there's no rhyme or reason behind the cries.! Hang in there!!
