Short term disability

I apologize if this is a silly question or has already been asked. I tried to look for a discussion like this but could not find one.

My work will not cover me with short term disability because it is considered pre-existing. I tried researching some other companies but I am struggling. Aflac does not cover you either. Has anyone had any luck finding a company where I can purchase short term disability while pregnant? Appreciate the help.

Re: Short term disability

  • I don't think you can. I think you need to open the policy before you get pregnant.

  • I work in HR, everything that I know about short term disability you have to be signed up before becoming pregnant. They deny afterwards. Short term disability is also used if you get injured, need surgery, etc. They treat it the same way as if you were to be injured, you wouldn't be able to sign up for benefits after becoming injured, you have to already have it as a "just in case". It's possible there's something out there I don't know about, but that's my knowledge of it.
  • It is common to have a waiting period or exclude existing conditions forever or for a period of time before things like maternity leave are covered.  They want you paying into the system before you plan on using it.  Pregnancy is a guaranteed payout for them to make...not like a random injury or illness would be.

My STD did work (started the policy with a new job at 18w with #2) but I was shocked that it did cover it.  They said that b/c I was a new hire (not just a late joiner) on the plan that the maternity time was covered.  I had planned all along that my leave would be all unpaid - but it wasn't - that was a nice surprise.

Aflac had a 10 month wait to cover the delivery payout (when I signed up in 2012)...basically you can buy the policy then have to wait a month before getting KU for it to cover that.

  • I work for Northwestern Mutual and we will sell short term disability to a pregnant person but it will probably have a rider saying that they will not cover disability if its due to the pregnancy.  If your company has a group disability plan then you can get that and there is no underwriting because they have to insure everyone regardless of pre-existing conditions.
  • you can also purchase STD from some states...I know the state of mass has some you can buy into.  Worth a look

  • Thanks everyone. I live in MO and was trying to look but it's difficult. I know Aflac does not cover. I work for a hospital and they say pregnancy is pre-existing and not covered.
  • Totally depends on your state and company. It's not something PA requires and my company does not offer it. Most personal plan require that you enroll 1 yr prior to pregnancy to be eligible. It's a shitty realization, but I'm with you. Just trying to save so I can pay myself during my leave.
  • I live in CA and have colonial std. There is a specific clause saying they won't cover pregnancy or birth related std if you opened your policy fewer than 10 months prior. What about state std? I know we get that here if you've been paying into it (which is an automatic deduction at every place I've ever worked).
  • @SunRae1‌ I just spoke with someone from northwestern and they said you didn't do short term just long term greater than 90 days.
  • I don't think you'll have much luck. :-( I have a policy through Aflac for STD to cover my maternity leave since my work doesn't offer paid maternity leave. On that policy, you have to have it for 10 months before using it if it is going to be used for pregnancy.

  • How long did you want disability for?
  • The company that I purchased mine through states that you cannot be "diagnosed" as pregnant before you sign up.  If you hadn't been to the doctor yet to confirm the pregnancy then I would say it might be ok but if you've been to the doctor already there are medical records confirming the pre-existing condition. Good luck!!

  • @SunRae1‌ just so I can have 12 weeks home with the baby.
  • The best thing for you to do with that little time is just save so you can afford the time off.  No insurance plan is really going to be worth getting for only 12 weeks...

The waiting period is common, I think when I signed up for Aflac short term disability - it's says doesn't include current pregnancy & something along the lines of me becoming pregnant within 2 months (cuz it took so many months to kick in)--> EDIT something about not being able to use it within 10 months once it goes active & took a full month to kick in so that was a full 11 months.
If it makes you feel any better, my monthly Aflac was post tax dollars & quite pricey. I didn't even Max out so it won't cover my income
