VBAC hopefuls

(I know there is a specific board for this, but I don't give a rat's ass.  It is dead as a door knob in there.)

Now for some questions!

1.   How has your pregnancy been?  Smooth sailing or a few complications?

2.  In what ways are you feeling optimistic about a VBAC?

3.  Pessimistic?

4.  How is your MW or doctor feeling about it?  Any encouraging words from the pros to share?

5.  What is your EDD?  Are you waiting to go into labour on your own or is there some sort of induction planned?

Re: VBAC hopefuls

  • 1.   How has your pregnancy been?  Smooth sailing or a few complications?

My pregnancy has been going pretty well!  A bit of bleeding in first tri.  Fortunately my TCM dr stopped that.  Then my thyroid meds were inadequate.  But my GP fixed that.

    2.  In what ways are you feeling optimistic about a VBAC?

The fact that my MWs, hospital, and the OB I visited with once were optimistic really helped.  I also feel pretty great physically, so I think I am up to it.  I also have lots of acupuncture and chiro appts booked to get my pelvis and cervix happy and my baby in the best position possible.

    3.  Pessimistic?

    This is so ridiculous...

But my mom saw a bloody psychic and the quack was poking into MY life.  And said "Another C Section for sure.  but don't worry.  The mom and baby will both survive."  Ugh.  Talk about planting a crappy seed.

    4.  How is your MW or doctor feeling about it?  Any encouraging words from the pros to share?

MWs are all very encouraging and always have been.  Our hospital has a "power to push" thing going on for VBAC moms, so that means a pep talk from an OB if you want one.

The OB was more encouraging than I thought he would be.  He gave me a 70% chance of a successful VBAC.  (not terrible.)   And he said, "It wasn't your fault you had a cesarean...   it was the baby and her quest to get herself as wrapped up in her cord before birth as possible -- that was to blame...."   So - if it was an issue with the baby, our chances are better.  If it was an issue with US, chances go down.

He also had to explain the risks.  Of course, uterine rupture came up.  I asked how many he has seen in his career.   And he said.  "Five.  In 25 years.  And they weren't all complete ruptures. Most were just a slight opening of the old incision.  They weren't a big deal."  I found THAT very encouraging.

I also asked what I can be doing to help this VBAC happen.  He said "Keep as active as possible these last several weeks.  And keep active in labour.  Move around as much as possible."

Even though I want to go med-free, I asked him about epidurals and their effects on VBACs (hey, I am curious...  especially after what he said about moving around in labour.)   He said that the literature basically shows that epis don't really have an affect on outcomes, BUT he said that his personal experience has shown that THEY DO.   From what he has seen, moms who go epi-free and med-free get their VBACs more often.

    5.  What is your EDD?  Are you waiting to go into labour on your own or is there some sort of induction planned?

Nov 30.   I am waiting to go into labour on my own until Dec 2nd...  then I have acupuncture scheduled to get me into labour if waiting it out doesn't work.

  • How has your pregnancy been?  Smooth sailing or a few complications?

Other than having morning sickness the whole time, its been complication free.

    2.  In what ways are you feeling optimistic about a VBAC?

The baby has been in a good position since 30 weeks. Plus my midwives think I'm a great candidate for vbac. Last time I was positive for group b strep and they said that they find with their patients that test positive the moms water breaks a little earlier than when the baby is ready. |Which is why my body wouldn't go into labour. There wasn't something preventing the baby like my pelvis or hips too small.

    3.  Pessimistic? Yes definately. I totally feel like having a normal natural birth is like hitting the lottery :( I'm doing my best to stay postitive and DH and my midwives are great support. I just want to try. |If I go into labour and I stall or something and eventually need a c section I am ok with it. But I just really want the chance to try and to feel at least one contraction.

    4.  How is your MW or doctor feeling about it?  Any encouraging words from the pros to share?

Answered it above. MW if very supportive. I need extra monitoring because I've had a csection, but at least at this hospital I'm going to its wireless. If we were going to the one we had DD in the fetal monitors are connected with cords so that would have been limiting.

    5.  What is your EDD?  Are you waiting to go into labour on your own or is there some sort of induction planned?
My EDD is Nov 7. One month from tomorrow. Pretty freaked out it coming so soon. Baby could really come any time. No induction planned. My MW doesn't start talking about that until your due date comes.

    Good luck ladies :)

My midwives have given me the option to talk to an OB too. But I haven't found it necessary. It would just be repeating what they h ave said to me. Plus the thought of driving out of town and waiting in a waiting room for another appointment doesn't interest me. If I'm going to VBAC I'm going to VBAC.

Well, SOMEONE has to win the lottery.  It might as well be one (or more) of us!

I don't blame you for not bothering to see an OB.  I did because the appointment was going to be 5 minutes from home... and hey, I was curious.  And fortunately I got some good info out of the man.  (ie, the thing about him only seeing 5 uterine "ruptures" in 25 years and 1000s of babies.)   I also appreciated that he was honest about his experience in seeing epidurals in action.

Best of luck.   It would be so nice to have a crystal ball to see how our births are going to play out....

  • 1. How has your pregnancy been? Smooth sailing or a few complications? Pregnancy has been ok. I'm high risk due to low PAPP-A hormone levels. (Had the same thing last pregnancy - NBD, just extra monitoring).

    2. In what ways are you feeling optimistic about a VBAC? Well, I've only gained 9 pounds total this pregnancy, and babe is already way lower than DS ever got last time (only dilated to a 3, and he never dropped). So I'm hoping for a non-giant who is eager to make her appearance!

    3. Pessimistic?
Although I haven't gained much, I also started off 17 pounds heavier (still hadn't lost all the baby weight), so who knows just how giant she will be. Plus my dr won't let me go much later than my EDD. I'm stressing that my EDD is off (crazy irregular periods due to BF) and I'll have a RCS even though baby will be early.

    4. How is your MW or doctor feeling about it? Any encouraging words from the pros to share?
OB says I'm a good candidate since the CS was due to baby's heart rate decels and nothing to do with me.
He's already got me on the books for a RCS for Thanksgivig morning, but I'm hoping to go like a week or 2 earlier.

    5. What is your EDD? Are you waiting to go into labour on your own or is there some sort of induction planned?
My EDD is 11/23. I HAVE to go into labour on my own, they refuse to induce when you've already had a CS. C'mon baby girl, the 13-19th would be a great time to make your appearance!!!

  • 1.   How has your pregnancy been?  Smooth sailing or a few complications?  It's been going really well so far, nothing out of the ordinary.

    2.  In what ways are you feeling optimistic about a VBAC?  I've already had two successful ones, so I know my body is capable of vaginal deliveries, and unless there's some unexpected complication (like if the baby is breech), I can't imagine not getting another VBAC.

    3.  Pessimistic?  I'm not at all pessimistic about it this time around.

    4.  How is your MW or doctor feeling about it?  Any encouraging words from the pros to share?  At this point, I think my doctors expect it to go well since I've done it before, and there's nothing to indicate this time won't be similar.

    5.  What is your EDD?  Are you waiting to go into labour on your own or is there some sort of induction planned?  I'm due 11/10, and I will go into labor on my own; my doctors have already said with previous pregnancies that I'm no longer a candidate for induction, so if I didn't go into labor on my own, I would have to have another c-section.

I am so excited to be on this VBAC journey and that there are other moms in here that are too!!

    1.   How has your pregnancy been?  Smooth sailing or a few complications?
Smooth sailing except for a few episodes of elevated BP recently. No real complications though.

    2.  In what ways are you feeling optimistic about a VBAC?
I have a better support system/birth team on my side this time (vs a traumatic birth experience with a crappy OB first time). My doula, OB and husband are so supportive and amazing. I feel like I can do this! It eases my mind some that baby girl is head down too.

    3.  Pessimistic?
I wouldn't say I'm pessimistic, but I'm definitely nervous about going into labor on my own and pushing since both are things I've never done before.
eta* Ok maybe there is one thing. I'm way heavier than I was with my son and I'm very out of shape. I've had a lot of negativity spewed at me about not being able to push because of that. I know being in shape helps, but there are people who deliver and are paralyzed or have other problems. So why can't I do it? Then I start feeling better about that :D

    4.  How is your MW or doctor feeling about it?  Any encouraging words from the pros to share?
My OB (mw can't practice here :/ ) is very supportive! She prefers vbac over rcs, barring no medical necessity or complications, anyway. I feel like she truly backs me and will give me every shot possible at a vbac.

    5.  What is your EDD?  Are you waiting to go into labour on your own or is there some sort of induction planned?
I'm due Nov 28. Waiting to go into labor on my own. Docs around here get real nervous after 41 weeks though, so I know my doc will want to discuss induction if I go past 41. I'll tackle that if and when I get there. She's agreed with me that there will not be a rcs scheduled for "just in case" I don't go into labor by a certain date. Neither of us agree with that, and I'm glad!

@Bandia12 -- it's looking that way at this point.. Although I do remember a few more mentioning VBACs?

  • 1.   How has your pregnancy been?  Smooth sailing or a few complications?  I had partial placenta previa and some bleeding around twenty weeks, but that resolved.  If it hadn't, a VBAC would have been out.

    2.  In what ways are you feeling optimistic about a VBAC?  They say I have a 50/50 chance of success, so I am cautiously optimistic.

    3.  Pessimistic?  DH is much more pessimistic

    4.  How is your MW or doctor feeling about it?  Any encouraging words from the pros to share?  It depends on which doctor in my practice you talk to.  Some are more optimistic than others.

    5.  What is your EDD?  Are you waiting to go into labour on your own or is there some sort of induction planned?  My due date is 11/5.  They won't let me go past 41 weeks.  We will schedule the RCS for 41 weeks, but give the VBAC a try if I go into labor on my own before then.  I do not want to be induced again.

  • I was a vbac hopeful. But since baby is so big(measuring 40 weeks last week at 35 weeks) my dr is worried because I have a hard time with my pelvis. I have to go into labor by myself because of a previous csection(that's their policy) and I'll probably go over due :( the scheduled csection is November 1st

Sorry to hear this.   Best of luck however it turns out!
