How often do you call out?

Awful mommy guilt since DD is sick again. My DH only gets a few sick days so cannot call out often and although I don't have a set number I feel awful when calling out for multiple days. This month has been terrible and I've been out 4 days already. We don't have family nearby and I just don't know what to do when it's multiple days in a row. Do you feel guilty when calling out?

  • The first year or so of daycare was rough. Now I'm not out as much but I still have days she is sick or my babysitter is. My so can't take sick days. His company just doesn't let them so it's all on me

  • I'm also the one who stays home when DD is sick. Luckily, I've only called off one day so far this year for DD.

I don't feel guilty about it anymore. My team at work is composed of 6 people, 5 of which are women with young children. So, I'm not the only one that needs time for her kid. That definitely helps keep any guilt at bay.

  • I don't feel guilty for calling out. If I have to I have to. I will use my time to do so. I am also not at a job where there is anything extremely time sensitive or that involves cancelling appointments or anything like that.

  • Thanks everyone- My mommy guilt spiral appreciates your sympathy and commiseration. I'm a teacher so I know that everyone here understands that kids get sick but I teach art and hate missing the same classes in a row and relying on a substitute to do the work with them. Thanks again. :)

  • I can't really call out at my job... I don't have backup.  But, I am able to work at home whenever I need to and my boss is understanding if I'm not at 100% those days when my kid is sick.  But I pretty much always have to be at least somewhat available, and need to handle any urgent things that come up.

This is similar to my situation. I have no backup and they have no problem calling me to work remotely if I can't be there.

  • I don't feel guilty. They know I have kids and that's why I have PTO.
