Cloth Diapering

Is the Spray Pal a must?

Brand new to spraying! I just ordered a BG sprayer (despite all the Amazon reviews saying it leaks) and I know the water pressure is quite high with that brand so I am worried about splatter. I feel like $25 is a lot of money for a plastic clipboard, which is essentially what the thing is, so I'm wondering if I can learn how to spray without causing spatter and get around having to buy one of these contraptions. TIA for your imput!

Re: Is the Spray Pal a must?

  • I don't use one. I've figured out what angle to spray at and have no major problems. If you think you will need one just make a hack. Plastic clipboard with a plastic file folder duct taped or glued on.

  • It depends on the type of cloth diaperer you are.  I would absolutely take a break from cloth diapering if my spray pal broke until a new one landed on my doorstep.  I love cloth diapering, but I have to do it in a very very controlled manner or I stop loving it.  I've never been able to control splatter without a spray pal.  Yes it is 25 bucks.  IMO it was very well spent money.  I'd do it again.

  • I have a BG sprayer and no spray pal. You can adjust the pressure higher and lower on the valve, and also by how hard you press the button.

  • I love my Spray Pal. I could probably CD without it, but I wouldn't want to. I've used one since we started solids. L poops between 1 and 4 times a day and they aren't usually ploppable.

  • I made one and it didn't work well for me at all. Mine was too small and the clip wasn't strong enough. Storage was also a pain. I have an Aquous (sp?) sprayer, so I can adjust the water pressure by how far I open the valve at the main line as well as by how I press the button like TJ said. I also keep Lysol wipes handy for a quick cleanup when I'm done.

  • Probably not necessary, but I'm a bit uncoordinated so we definitely needed *something*.

I bought a Flo sprayer from the people that make Blueberry diapers.
No spray pal, but I've got a spray collar.  It looks a bit ridiculous, but it seems to work well, and it just lives on the sprayer.
  • We don't have a spray pal so I've just been adjusting the angles and pressure when I spray to find something that works.

  • I use a 5 gallon bucket from lowes with the bottom cut out. Fits perfectly in the toilet and I store it under the sink. I just wring the diaper out in the toilet rather than letting it drip dry. My hands usually get dirty anyway so it doesn't bother me to wring it out. You could probably attach a clip if you wanted though.

  • So, I can't lay a diaper in the toilet bowl without it being soaked in the water. And then when I take it out its all dripping nasty water. I'm assuming this is just the nature of our particular toilet?

I mean, I can spray with as minimal of nasty backspray as possible. I just do lots of folding. And luckily I only need to spray a few times a week - so I'm not stressing over this. But, I can in no way lean the dipe against the toilet bowl.
Stringy, if you used your Spray Pal you could squeeze the water out with it.  I swear that the ability to squeeze the nasty water out is nearly as awesome as having a flat place to spray.

  • No spray pal, and no problems.

We have the BG sprayer too, and while it has incredible power, you can adjust how much you need. We very rarely have it above half strength and it works amazing to clean a diaper.

I watch a tutorial that you fold The diaper in half (PUL sides together) then spray down the diaper. You don't come at the diaper at an angle.

  • Phew! I've just now had a chance to read through all the comments. I appreciate everyone's feedback. I'm going to give it a go without it and see how bad the splatter situation is. It sounds like if I can figure out a good angle and water pressure combo, I will be OK. I'm not one to get grossed out by touching poop, but I definitely don't want to be dunking my hands in the toilet water either. I've been washing poops off in the sink and then disinfecting the sink afterwards and it's just gotten to be too much and it started clogging up the drain. Plus her poops are getting worse so I feel the sprayer is an absolute necessity now. Our bathroom is the size of a closet as it is so the thought of having one more thing to find a place for was stressing me out...the Spray Pal looks pretty big! I'm hoping I can learn to get by without it. Thanks again!

  • I still want to know if sarah226 washes her bucket.

I don't scrub it every time, no. I rinse it off with the sprayer though. I clean it with toilet bowl cleaner every so often. I don't really use it much anymore, actually, since most poops are plopable these days. The only other stuff under the sink is the plunger and toilet brush which are equally gross.

    oh dear...
  • I love our Potty Pail.  I found it after the rec. on Green Mountain's website.  I have a BG sprayer- not theirs.  But I love the pail.  I don't have to worry about overspray.  The dirty water runs out the bottom right into the toilet.  And if I put in the stopper I can soak in there.  I also have a no touch sensor hand soap dispenser for when I wring out diapers (I turn the water on w/ my elbow).
  • I'm really scared for when the spraying has to start. DH has already told me he won't be doing that. I was hoping I could plop in the toilet and rinse in the laundry room b/c our bathroom is so tiny.  The toilet is in between the sink and the tub and there is no room for spraying.

But now hearing about a sink getting clogged with poo..IDK what to do!

Hmm I think my hubby could totally make a potty pail. But then that's an even bigger thing to store than the Spray Pal. And yeah, poo clogging the sink is not fun. I would not recommend getting yourself into that situation :P
