Toddler Bed Tips Please

Hello!

So DD started trying to get out of her crib about 2 weeks ago - only a couple of times though. Id watch her through the monitor and stay right by her room in case she actually was able to get her leg up on the rail, but that didn't happen. I told DH and we both agreed she simply wasn't tall enough yet but we'd keep an eye out and when we thought she was almost able to we'd convert. Except we were wrong, apparently she is tall enough (or she's simply a monkey lol) and this morning we just heard THUMP!!! I looked at the monitor and she wasn't in her crib so I knew it was her. We ran to the room and she was already up and standing at the door crying to be picked up.

Sooo, we'll be converting her crib to a toddler bed and I'd love any tips about further safety proofing her room etc. etc.

For those of you wondering: she's 16.5 months old. 19.8lbs and 31.5in

Re: Toddler Bed Tips Please

  • Ok thanks so much. Our shades don't have strings so we're good there and the crib came with the rail with the opening so good there too. Thanks for the other tips

  • Yes that's on my list. Ugh this is nerve wrecking. Lol

  • Good luck with the transition. My LO has been on the mattress on the floor for a while now and she still gets up and down so I would highly recommend putting a baby gate up.

  • Hey sorry just saw this post we just converted her crib into a toddler bed because H hurt his back and couldn't lift her into the crib anymore and I have no sick days left.

It was hard. The first few nights were spent putting her back in her bed over and over. It helped that we had down sleep training where we laid her down each time she stood up, so we used a similar method here.

That first night I made sure I cooked a starchy carby dinner, something to make her sleepy. Turkey would be a good suggestion. I also warmed up a bottle of milk...take that pediatrician. We did bath and bedtime routine exactly the same and I made sure to spend lots of cuddle time so she wouldn't be craving physical contact. Then we went into her room and I sang her bedtime song and picked her up exactly as I would had it been her crib. She obviously climbed right out. But I lay her back down and sang that song again. I think it took about 30 times....not fucking kidding. I sang that damn song 30 times, but that's the thing that happens right befor she goes to bed. Anyways eventually she figure it out.

Ok so next night she fell asleep on the foam mattress on the floor. I let her get pretty deeply sleeping and then moved her to her bed. Third night was a nightmare screaming, crying the works, she sat behind her door and we had to keep putting her back in bed, but it happened.

Fast forward she has been in her toddler bed for three weeks now and it's working great. In the morning she will wake up and read books until we come to get her.

I wish you good luck, pm me if you have questions. It was hard but I am so glad I stuck it out. She really seems to love it. And her sleep is mostly back to normal with the occasional early wake up.

Amazing.  The same little girl who made you crawl in the crib with her :)

Haha I had forgotten about that. Wow she has come a long way.
