MOTY - My heart is still racing

I took DS out for a walk in his stroller after dinner tonight since it was a beautiful, warm evening.  We live on a very quiet street, and just a few blocks over is a really busy urban area with a bus loop and lots of traffic, etc.

Anyways, we walked to the busy area to go to a coffee shop.  Across the street from the coffee shop, we stopped at a pedestrian-controlled intersection.  As I was waiting for the light to change, I was daydreaming, checking out the store behind me, etc.  I was jolted out of my daydream by a bunch of cars honking and looked out and saw a little kid running in the street, one lane into the four-lane street.  Then I realized that it was MY EFFING KID!!!!!!!  He'd escaped from his stroller was running into the intersection in his stocking feet (He was going to stay in the stroller for the walk, so I didn't bother with shoes).  My heart stopped and I bolted and scooped him up.  The car horns honking scared him, so thankfully he came to me instantly and didn't play catch-me-if-you-can.

I realized afterwards that he hadn't figured out how to unstrap himself, but *I* hadn't strapped him in when we left the house.  It was the first, and last, time that I haven't strapped him in.

I'm grateful beyond words that it ended OK, and want to cry when I think about what could have happened.  I'm not breathing a word of this to DH, so you ladies are hearing my confession.  I've stopped shaking, but my heart is still in my throat.  Thank you, guardian angel, for making sure that the cars approaching the intersection were going the speed limit and noticed a small boy in a red sweater and green socks running in the street.

Re: MOTY - My heart is still racing

  • Oh my word. This makes me want to cry because something similar happened with DD a couple months ago. We live along a busy road and we were going for a walk. She was "helping" us push her stroller because she didn't want to go in it. Neither DH or I was holding her hand... I guess we assumed she'd keep pushing the stroller? Anyway, all of a sudden she turned and bolted for the road. I happened to be looking at her just as she did it and grabbed her before she ran into the street. DH wasn't looking and if I hadn't seen her, she easily could've been hit. The thought of what could have happened haunted me for weeks (kinda still does). I am so glad your little boy is okay! Try not to beat yourself up too much, we all screw up and I'm sure you'll never forget that again.

  • Those close calls can scare you for a long time. You might want to warn your DH that your DS can escape the stroller easily if he's not buckled in if that's something that's new, but maybe you don't need to share the scariest details. DH told me how he almost got hit on the Autobahn with both girls in the car with him a few months ago and it freaked me out for a really long time - I wish he hadn't told me.

  • That is one terrifying story.  When M was a few months old, we were taking her on walks every night.  We had a snap n go and she was always happy to nap in her carseat.  DH did not buckle her in, which was pretty common because she was tiny and wasn't mobile.  However, he dumbly tipped up the stroller to go up our porch steps, and she slid out, and landed face-first on the concrete.  She had a terrible scraped up nose and we felt awful because what a terrible way to be awakened.  This was after we'd almost killed her several other ways in the preceding months.  I think we are better now...but mostly she's just tougher...
