Call the hospital ahead of time. Or have your doc call them. Bring documentation from your doc in case they give you a hard time. And definitely bring your own formula!

Will baby be in the nursery at all, or will she stay with you in your room? If she is in the nursery it may be harder to monitor their compliance, which is why I recommend documentation.

  • Bring your own. Its your child. I'd just get a note from your doctor in case they give you any crap for it.
  • I have called the hospital and spoke with nursing supervisor .. Waiting to here back from her about the policy and if I need documents stating my baby needs to be on this type of formula .. This is very good hospital so They deal with moms and babies that extreme high risks this why I am delivering there.. I am bringing my formula just in case she will be in the NICU. for a few days for observation and testing to make sure she is ok and her heart is healthy which is standard.. Thanks to all of you for you advice and kind words I have had nasty judgmental comments on the fact I am not BF it's been very emotional for me because of that .. I don't see why people have a issue with it ?? Thanks again and I will update when I hear back from hospital on there policy
  • I used to work at Brigham & women's in Boston & if that is your hospital I don't see why they wouldn't encourage you to bring whatever formula you need. It is a fantastic hospital! I also couldn't breast feed my son so I understand your sensitivity on the subject.
  • I am sorry you have to deal with that and feel your pain! After trying to nurse a preemie then deciding to pump only, DS suffered from severe reflux and also tested with a milk protein allergy so all my hard work and storage was wasted...

I would ask and make sure an allergy bracelet be placed on the baby's ancle right away too! Perhaps the nursery can bring in some of the formula you will need to have it on hand. No excuse for them not to accommodate the needs of their patient!

  • Thanks for the great advice the husband and I have decided to buy the nursette bottles of the formula she will be on and bring it with us with a note from my doctor that there is a family history of milk protein allergy and lactose allergy !!! My husband will be watching her and places a sign that states her allergy !!! As well as asking for allergy alert bracelet ... Thanks for all the support and advice it means so much !!!
  • Bring your own but don't open it until baby is born. We have parents do this at our hospital all the time.
  • What heart defect do you have? There's a great heart mamas community on fb that I'm a part of and while most of us are parents to heart babies, there are several who are the actual heart patients themselves. Is there a chance your baby will have a heart defect as well? And I've never heard of a hospital that can't get a specialty formula if that is what the patient needs. Which formula will she be on? There's so a great medical supply group on fb that often has many different types of specialty formulas free for the cost of shipping or shipping plus what they had to copay for. It has helped us out quite a bit in getting things we have needed that our insurance won't pay for.
