Loewen or Lowen for a girly girl

Hi guys, I'm new to this board.  I'm about five seconds pregnant (5 weeks actually) but we're thinking of names.   Yesterday I met somebody with the last name Loewen and think that it would be very pretty for a girl.  I'm wondering if Lowen would be an easier to spell take on the name.

The middle name is a family name and would be Irene.

Which version do you guys think would be easier for people to spell or read?

Thank you, hope you are all having a great weekend.

PP's suggestion of Elowen is lovely. Loewen is not.

*Eta I would think it was a typo of Elowen.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
    3 failed matches in 2012.
    Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
    Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

  • Sorry but to me that's awful.
  • Not good. I agree with @Grace0609, it definitely sounds like you're mispronouncing the "r" in Lauren.

I say go with Irene as the first name. Irene is great!

  • I'm not a fan. Like pps say it will be mistaken for Lauren when pronounced and misstaken for Elowen when written.

  • It sounds very unattractive to my ear. I also agree it would mistaken for Lauren frequently (esp when she's little and says her own name). I would keep looking.

  • I don't see a connection with Lauren. To me, it reads like a variation of Lohan and I wouldn't want that association for my daughter because of the actress. It also reminds me of the hardware store Lowe's. I love PP's suggestion of Elowen.

  • It sounds like a 2yo (that cannot pronounce their Rs) trying to say Lauren . I don't like it. P.S. Stick to first names.
  • I agree with everyone else, it sounds like Lauren pronounced with a speech impediment. I don't like it at all.

If you have a boy, you could use Owen?

    I love Irene!
  • My niece could not say my name when she was little, so I was Aunt Lowa for the longest time. Was a sad day when she first called me Aunt Laura, because it meant she was growing up. So, yes, to me, "Lowen" sounds totally like a small child trying and failing to say Lauren. I would not do that to a child, if it were me.

  • Like Lowenbrau, the beer?  (I'm too lazy to put in the umlauts.)  Yes, I do miss alcohol that much.

I think it is generally weird to use a surname as a FN when it has no family or other personal significance to you.  I think it is even weirder to use a surname that does not sound remotely feminine on a girl.  (I mean, other than it sounding vaguely like Lauren I have no idea why it sounds like a girl name to you.)  So I don't care how you spell it, I think it's whack for either sex but especially for a girl.

I love Irene.  It is way better than Loewen and maybe you should consider it in the FN spot and go wild with the MN.

  • I'm sorry, I can see it if you like different names but that will be horrible on your DD when she's older.
  • Sorry, I don't care for it. Like pp I think the pronunciation sounds like a child's pronunciation of Lauren and the spelling like a garbled version of Elowen. Both of these names would make lovely options for you, imo. Other suggestions:

    Gwendolen
    Leona
    Bronwen
    Winifred
    Eleanor
    Flora
    Laurel

    Good luck!

  • If it turns out that later you love Lowen, I would go with Elowen. You could call her Lowen but give her a name that will grow up with her.

As the mother of two 3 year olds, I agree with the mispronounced Lauren though.
  • I totally see what you guys are saying about the Lauren thing.  Thanks for pointing that out.

I didn't think it would cause such a commotion since it's similar to the very popular Rowan, which is easy to say and spell and often used for girls.

I've never heard Elowen.  I'm not in the US so things may be a bit different here.  Brought it up to my sister and she actually knows a Lowen.

I did a little research and have some interesting points...

One in every 351,102 Americans is named LOWEN and popularity of name LOWEN is 2.85 people per million.

If we compare the popularity statistics of LOWEN to USA's population statistics, we can estimate that as of October.05.2014 23:44 there are 914 people named as LOWEN in the United States and the number is increasing by 7 people every year.

Still on the list but the whole speech impediment Lauren thing has moved it down a few notches :)

Well I can tell you that this is a legit "german?" last name. Spelled correctly with both "e"s it was my maiden name. so I know a LOT of people with this LN in US and Canada. and NOBODY know how to pronounce it or spell it. It means lion, which maybe cool but not very many of us liked it that well and I was very happy to change it when I got married. Anyone with that last name is going to side eye you if you fn it IMO, I'm not really a fan.

  • OP, I think it's a little strange that you want to name your daughter after a random person's surname.

That being said, I am not sure I understand the title of your post?  How would you know if your daughter is going to be a "girly- girl"?

    I hate that phrase, BTW.

  • Obviously I don't think or want my daughter (if that what I have) to be a girly girl,  it's just a figure of speech.  I work in a field where less than 5% employed are women so trust me not going for a girly girl just a figure of speech.  Some of you take things so literally.  Thanks for the feed back on Lowen though.

It's not really a figure of speech.  It's a stereotype.

  • LOL I hope one day when you kid asks how you came up with her name you say something more substantial than "it's the last name of some random person I met..."

Like others said, it sounds like Lauren but with a speech difficulty. I'm willing to bet almost everyone will think her name is Lauren until told differently.

Similar names: Lakyn, Lumen, Laurel, Lorelei

Like the poster above me, I think it is weird to start gender stereotyping your infant at 5 weeks gestation. If she happens to be a girl (50% chance) she may not be "girly" at all. I actually find Lowen to be quite masculine - like Owen meets Landon. It's also a surname which to me is masculine.

  • But I have definitely got misunderstood on here before too. Because different people have different ways of expressing themselves and different ways of interpreting what people say. Some read way too much into what someone said while others expect you to read too much into what they're saying. I thought OP was referring to the style of names she was looking for. But then I don't go around watching to make sure everything everyone else says is pc.

So, OP's title is insinuating that if she had a daughter, that daughter would be a "girly- girl" (whatever that means), and then asking if we think the name she is asking about would suit a "girly-girl".

It's offensive for a few reasons.

    1) It's gender stereotyping, which is always gross.  The child isn't even born yet (nor is the sex known) and she's projecting her own thoughts of how a girl looks and acts on an unborn child.

    2) She saying there's a definition of girly.  To me if you identify as a girl, you are "girly".  You can be straight, trans, bi, queer, be an anatomical male, wear dresses, not ever wear dresses, work in coal mining, work as a ballet instructor; but if you identify as a girl, that is what maks you "girly".

I have a lot of feels about gender equality/ stereotyping, and flippant comments like girly- girl bug me.  Let's do better for our children, please.

    Sorrynotsorry.
