Breastfeeding

Drinking and breastfeeding

Hey there!
So my baby is now 8 weeks old and I'm considering having a glass or two of champagne tonight, I'm really nervous about drinking and breastfeeding, what rules do you all go by? I'm willing to pump and dump but I don't wanna waste any milk I don't have too..
Thank you in advance for your advice!!

Don't pump and dump! It's a waste of perfectly fine milk.

I also go by the "ok to drive, ok to feed" rule.  Alcohol goes to our blood.  BM is made from our blood.  The alcohol content in our BM will be about that of our blood.  So, our 14% alcohol glass of wine might result in a BAC of 0.04% (maybe more, probably less).  That means our BM would be roughly 0.04% alochol -- less than that of orange juice.  The alcohol metabolizes out of our BM at the same rate as it goes out of our blood. In all reality, the bigger safety risk is handling baby when intoxicated.

The only reason to pump and dump is that you've had too much to drink, you will not be handling baby, and you are uncomfortably engorged or want to keep up supply until you can feed again.

You can have a drink or two and feed baby no problem.  If it's your first drink in almost a year, you might be surprised at how one glass affects you.

    Cheers!

Thank you! This made me feel much better!!
  • PPs have given great advice.  The only thing I have to add is that bathing a slippery newborn is surprisingly difficult after half a glass of wine.  I tried that exactly once- now I wait until after bath time!
  • If I drink, I either do it while I'm nursing or at night after the last feeding. That way you have the maximum amount of time in between feedings. Cheers!!
