What sizes to wash

This may be a question more for the PGAL moms. I currently plan on only washing and removing the tags from baby girl's newborn clothes. I intend to leave the tags on all the 0-3 stuff. Of course this may come back to bite me if she's big but I kinda doubt she will be. My rationel is that something may happen to her and until she is safely here and brought home, I want the ability to return as much as I can. I realize this is a bit morbid and possibly disordered thinking. So, my question: what sizes are you washing and preparing for little ones arrival?

Re: What sizes to wash

  • With DS we washed through 3 months, and was glad we did because the newborn outfits only fit him for like a week.

  • I bought all clothes second-hand so they are all washed. Tags will remain on gifts until I know for sure I need them.

  • I plan to wash one NB and one 0-3 months outfit to bring to the hospital for his going home outfit. All else will remain unwashed with tags, but separated by sizes. Once we know baby is healthy, and we know what size he is, then my mom will wash a few more things so we are ready for the first couple of days when we get home. PgAL sucks.

This seems like a sensible idea. Thanks!

  • I'm doing the opposite. I'm only washing one Nb outfit. I'm fairly sure this guy will be at least an 8 pounder and never see any newborn sizes! DD was 7.1 and born at 36 wks 5 days. So unless this guys comes early too, he will be too big for nb

  • All of my clothes so far are hand-me-downs or consignment finds, so I don't have anything new except a custom printed onesie from our friend that I couldn't return anyway.

  • I've washed all newborn & 0-3 months clothes... The rest I'll wash when she gets bigger & is close to needing them.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Thanks for the advice all.  I think I will go ahead and wash all the newborn stuff and then all the hand me down 0-3 month clothes.  I'll hang on to the new with tags 0-3 month things.  For some reason, I just can't quite bring myself to consider cleaning them yet.  Even though I am confident this little girl is coming home.

  • DH and I make smaller full term babies. DS was born at 40 weeks and was 6#12oz. DD is measuring small and I weigh less than or equal to the amount I did during this week with DS. DS worn NB for at least a whole month some things even longer. I've washed everything so far. NB, 3 month, and even 6 months. I don't have a lot of clothes yet though, and I really think she'll be wearing NB for awhile like DS. DS is almost 14 months old and still wears, 6-12 month clothes.
  • I wouldn't wash all nb stuff. Maybe one outfit. Both of my kids were close to 9 lbs and barely wore the nb stuff at all.

  • I will wash all my newborn stuff and a handful of 0-3 months clothing. Honestly, I can't even fathom not bringing my baby home but if something were to happen, I would most likely donate my stuff to someone in need.
  • We haven't washed any of the clothes in our basement yet.  Our son was 8 lbs 12 oz at birth and didn't loose much his first few days.  I might have been in newborn for a week.

If you are scared, I would have a few outfits of each ready.  What you could do is go to a second hand store and have some of those outfits ready.  Hopefully everything goes well with you and your LO.

  • I'm PGAL I have was all premie (my DD was 6lb 9oz she wore premie for a week or two) Nb and 0-3. I am leaving tags on all gifts.
  • I should clarify that my DS only weighed 6 lbs 11 oz when he was born. He was also short (19 in). Because I thought he might be big, I had one onsie in newborn size and that's it. Everything else was 0-3 month. He proceeded to swim in his clothes for a good month or more. It was ridiculous. This is why I'm focusing in the nb size stuff. I want to make sure I have enough to cover baby girl for at least a couple weeks.

  • I'm going to go ahead and wash the newborn and 0-3 months clothes. I don't want to even consider the possibility that this baby won't be wearing them (even typing that was hard). I am going to plan on a healthy happy little one!

This is my plan too !
  • I don't want to consider the possibility either, but it's there, and I totally get where you are coming from.  This month being pregnancy and infant loss awareness month, PLUS our angelversary on the 13th is making things even tougher for me.

I haven't purchased anything for the nursery or washed any clothes yet, but my plan is to wash NB sized things a couple of weeks before my scheduled c-section along with a handful of 0-3 month sized things.  Blankets/swaddlers, onsies and sleepers, no real 'outfits'.

I keep reminding myself that buying or preparing things won't change the outcome either way.  One of my favorite PGAL mantras is "Hope doesn't make bad things happen."

Thinking of you and hoping for some comfort and excitement <3

  • I washed all the clothes I got even up to 6-12. They are all washed and nicely folded in her dresser. I couldn't even think about not coming home with my baby :( I'm hoping for the best.

((hugs)) I'm sorry this is such a hard month.  That is a good mantra for the situation.  Thank you.  Of course I don't even want to consider that baby girl won't come home.  But, I can't help but be aware.  It's a fine line, right?
