Hi guys, I'm new to this board. I'm about five seconds pregnant (5 weeks actually) but we're thinking of names. Yesterday I met somebody with the last name Loewen and think that it would be very pretty for a girl. I'm wondering if Lowen would be an easier to spell take on the name.
The middle name is a family name and would be Irene.
Which version do you guys think would be easier for people to spell or read?
Thank you, hope you are all having a great weekend.
Re: Loewen or Lowen for a girly girl
What about:

*Eta I would think it was a typo of Elowen.

I think it is generally weird to use a surname as a FN when it has no family or other personal significance to you. I think it is even weirder to use a surname that does not sound remotely feminine on a girl. (I mean, other than it sounding vaguely like Lauren I have no idea why it sounds like a girl name to you.) So I don't care how you spell it, I think it's whack for either sex but especially for a girl.
I love Irene. It is way better than Loewen and maybe you should consider it in the FN spot and go wild with the MN.
Gwendolen
Leona
Bronwen
Winifred
Eleanor
Flora
Laurel
Good luck!
As the mother of two 3 year olds, I agree with the mispronounced Lauren though.
I didn't think it would cause such a commotion since it's similar to the very popular Rowan, which is easy to say and spell and often used for girls.
I've never heard Elowen. I'm not in the US so things may be a bit different here. Brought it up to my sister and she actually knows a Lowen.
I did a little research and have some interesting points...
One in every 351,102 Americans is named LOWEN and popularity of name LOWEN is 2.85 people per million.
If we compare the popularity statistics of LOWEN to USA's population statistics, we can estimate that as of October.05.2014 23:44 there are 914 people named as LOWEN in the United States and the number is increasing by 7 people every year.
Still on the list but the whole speech impediment Lauren thing has moved it down a few notchesOP, I think it's a little strange that you want to name your daughter after a random person's surname.
That being said, I am not sure I understand the title of your post? How would you know if your daughter is going to be a "girly- girl"?
I hate that phrase, BTW.

It's not really a figure of speech. It's a stereotype.

So, OP's title is insinuating that if she had a daughter, that daughter would be a "girly- girl" (whatever that means), and then asking if we think the name she is asking about would suit a "girly-girl".
It's offensive for a few reasons.
1) It's gender stereotyping, which is always gross. The child isn't even born yet (nor is the sex known) and she's projecting her own thoughts of how a girl looks and acts on an unborn child.
2) She saying there's a definition of girly. To me if you identify as a girl, you are "girly". You can be straight, trans, bi, queer, be an anatomical male, wear dresses, not ever wear dresses, work in coal mining, work as a ballet instructor; but if you identify as a girl, that is what maks you "girly".
I have a lot of feels about gender equality/ stereotyping, and flippant comments like girly- girl bug me. Let's do better for our children, please.
Sorrynotsorry.
