Coming over from May looking for advice

I am an IVFer so keep in mind I'm a little wound up to begin with. At 8 1/2 weeks we heard a heartbeat (182bpm) and the baby was measuring 8w2d, which the doctor was happy with. At the appointment I mentioned my stress over virtually no symptoms. I was told not to worry and released to my OB. At my 9w initial OB appointment the CNP was super nice and told me to get my next ultrasound whenever I wanted but that I wouldn't get the next one until 20 weeks. She suggested 10 weeks, but since our 8 week pictures were so unclear I mentioned waiting until 12 weeks so we could get better pictures and feel a little more reassured. She didn't care one way or another. Of course here I am at 10 weeks overthinking due to a continued lack of symptoms-other than a Poochy belly.

What did everyone do? When were your scans? I guess on one hand I keep thinking about how your uterus can grow even with a mmc and wouldn't I want to know ASAP if something is going wrong? On the other hand, if things are going well, it could be reassuring later to have later photos. Do I split the difference and do 11 weeks? Leave it at 12?

Thanks!

  • I'm a total scan hog and have had 6 scans simply because I had a previous loss and am just so paranoid about everything. Even though this pregnancy has been pretty smooth sailing I still worry. However I'm allowed to call my OBs office and request a scan whenever I feel like it so I totally take advantage. I also get a quick scan at my OB appointments every 4 weeks. To be honest if I were in your shoes I would ask for the scan sooner rather than later, only to ease my mind but that's just my opinion.

  • I would wait. I had one at 6 weeks and another at 12, the 12 week was awesome. I'm 15 weeks now and have no symptoms either, my stomach is as flat as can be with no bump in sight. Today I actually forgot I was pregnant because of how normal I feel. The extra two week wait is worth it.

@clairhuxtable‌ , @SharkFarts‌ , I think OP meant that her ob is giving her one more scan in addition to her AS, and she can choose when.

OP, I'm with everyone else, wait until 12 weeks. I am pgal (mmc) so I get the anxiety, but if you get a scan at 10 weeks, you are just going to have to wait 10 weeks til your AS and the anxiety won't be any lessened. May as well wait until 12 weeks and get a good pic and know that you are almost to the second trimester.

ETA: I've never heard that your uterus continues to grow with a mmc. Mine didn't. Is this really true?

Well, I only know this because of chat board conversations I've Googled. So, I'm hoping not, but the conversation I've seen is that their bodies didn't recognize the babies had stopped growing and the sacs had continued growing for some people. Or that's how I read it. :/

Thanks for the feedback everyone! One really helpful thing is hearing that everyone is worried about what I'm worried about. I suppose since I didn't have symptoms before my other two good ultrasounds I shouldn't worry; it just seems so unnatural at this point though to still not have anything. A little ms or sore bbs might put my mind at ease :/
  • Personally, I had the first one at 9wks and will be having one at 13wks tomorrow for my NT scan. The wait for the next u/s is always a struggle and I totally understand wanting reassurance sooner than later. However, I'd wait until 12 wks. You'll get a better pic, be within the window for the NT scan if you want one, and the wait for the 20 wk u/s will be shorter. Hang in there!
  • IVF here, and pretty tightly wound as well. I had scans every 2 weeks (lucky, I know!) I've also had little to no symptoms during the first tri. Honestly by about week 10-12 I pretty much felt normal and not pg at all.

I'm of the thinking that I'd rather "know now" than continue worrying for an extra two weeks, but like others have said, if you do an earlier scan then it's a long stretch until your 20w scan. Will you really be satisfied if you do it now, or just want more (cause that's how I am!!).

Also- see if there is an Elective US place near you- usually the elective 3D places you can go as early as 12-14 weeks and they can show you baby plus tell sex after 14 weeks. It might be a nice treat between the 12 (or 10 whatever you decide) week scan and the 20 week scan. It's only about $45 where I live which is a small price to pay for piece of mind. :)
