Cooks come in!

Help me out with this recipe...it calls for catalina dressing, but I don't have any, nor have I ever tried it before, so I don't know if we'll like it. Can you think of something I can substitute it with? Here's the recipe ingredients:

Cranberry chicken:
8 oz catalina dressing
1 pkg onion soup mix
1- 1 lb can whole berry cranberry sauce
4 chicken breasts

I was thinking apple sauce, but that might be too sweet or funky with the onion soup mix. Any ideas?

Re: Cooks come in!

  • I'm not terribly familiar with catalina dressing, but I think it's sweet/tangy.  So apple sauce might be fine, or straight apple juice.  It should be fine with the onion soup - onions and apples go beautifully together!

The cranberries are sour, the  catalina (or apple) are sweet, the onion soup is salty, that should about cover it!

  • My mom makes this recipe all the time! It is really good. No idea what you could substitute though.. Catalina is pretty unique. Apple sauce does not seem like it would work for me..

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • I haven't had Catalina dressing in years, but isnt it similar to French?
  • I think it is like French, but I've never had either. That's good to hear the the recipe is good though @jbatch. I'll try it out, thanks for the recipe you found @DC2London, and if I don't like it, I'll try it with applesauce the next time.
