2:00 - 4:00 birthday party, food questions.

DS is having his birthday party at the ymca and the time slot we got was 2-4 pm. We have an hour in the party room for doing food and gifts. For this time of day I feel like a full meal will be overkill, so I was thinking of just having snack foods in addition to the cake. So, I'm looking for suggestions on snack ideas that will be easy to take with us & set up quickly. It'll be kids ranging from 2-6 (mostly 4 & 5 year olds though) and most parents.
Also, since we're not doing a full meal I'm worried that 1 hour will be too much time in the party room. Should I have some activities or games ready to keep the kids occupied?

  • Caleb's first birthday party is next weekend at that same time. We're doing cake, cheese and crackers, fruit salad, chips and dips, a veggie tray... I feel like that might be it? I think so. Unless I think of something else to do before then.

  • Emily's party was 2-4 this year and we did a popcorn trail mix: popcorn, chocolate-covered raisins, dried fruit bits, M&M candies, nuts in little take out popcorn containers. Super cute and easy and the kids could easily pick through what they did/didn't like. :)

  • DS's birthday party is the exact same time tomorrow. I'm doing pinwheels (PB&J ones for the kids!), veggie tray, fruit salad, chips, and drinks. Also, cupcakes.

I like pinwheels for these type of events too. Not too heavy or labor intense but more substantial than just chips and dip.

  • It may be a regional thing, but I always expect pizza and cake at a party.  If you're serving cake, why not have the pizza because chances are they're not going to be hungry for dinner in an hour or so anyway.  It may have just been an example, but if you're doing PB&J, please do ham and cheese on another platter.  There are so many kids with peanut allergies it's not worth the risk, and as a mom of a kid with peanut allergies, it really sucks when she has to be excluded and isn't accomidated in any other way.
  • Okay, I guess I am totally on the other side. I don't think you need much at all for a party from 2 to 4. Unless you specified pizza or "lunch" on the invite, I would only expect cake. I'd do some kind of little snack like Goldfish or cheese sticks and fruit or something, plus cake and a drink. Or maybe even just an extra half-hour party time and then just cake.

I do think an hour is too much for just cake and snacks. Will they let you do 45 minutes for food/gifts and extra time in the Y fun areas?
