Tl;dr: Benjamin was born on October 3 at 11 am. He was 6 lbs 5 oz and 19" long. Labored for 21 hours and pushed for 2 and a half of it. We love him so much!
Full version: I suddenly started having issues with high blood pressure at my 38 week appointment. It was only 141/90 but a lot higher than my norm. So I had to go to L&D that day (Tuesday) and get bloodwork and more blood pressure readings. They were mostly high normal but blood work was good. My urine showed 1+ protein though so I had to do the 24 hour urine. The next day I went to work but felt dizzy, so my doctor sent me home on bed rest for the day with instructions to stop in to the office the next morning before work. So I dropped off my urine Thursday morning and went to the ob office. My first pressure must have been terrible because the nurse wouldn't even tell me what it was. She took me to the exam room and used the manual one which was apparently better but she still wouldn't tell me. When the doctor came she didn't look happy. She said I was at 140/100 and that she didn't want to wait anymore and they would be inducing me that day. She was planning to do it at 39 weeks if my pressure was still up, but since I was having symptoms and I was 38 weeks 5 days she said we should just do it now.
So I called my husband who of course was all freaked out and basically ran out of work without saying anything. He took the dogs to boarding while I grabbed the last minute things and did some cleaning. When he got home we headed to the hospital to get the induction underway.
My pressures at the hospital were high normal, but my 24 hour urine showed 2+ protein so they were considering it pre-e. I got one last meal just as they started my pitocin around 2 and we waited. I was having contractions already before they started it so nothing really changed for a while. I got checked and was only 3cm so they said it'd be a while. By 7:30 or so my contractions suddenly started to hurt. After I think maybe 3 of them one on top of another my husband asked if I wanted my epi and I said yes so he called the nurse.
My epi was awful. I have nothing to compare it to, but a student did it and had to stick me twice. When they inserted the needle and I felt all that cold stuff and I could tell they were having trouble I started to freak a little. It hurt but I think the fear made it worse. I started to cry and the nurse held my hand and tried to calm me down but I was sobbing at that point and making it harder for them to get it in the right place. My husband had to sit on the other side of a curtain and said he wanted to come punch the anesthesiologist in the face because I was crying so much! The actual anesthesiology doctor had come in at that point and I did not like him. He's like "oh you got this tattoo on your back, didn't that hurt?" Basically like I was an ass hole for crying but having a tattoo? Whatever. They finally got it in and it started to work.
Not too long after my epidural my water broke. I was still at a 3 at that point but we thought it would speed things up. At around 2 am they checked and the doc said I still had part of the bag of waters in front of baby's head so she broke it and said I immediately went to a 4.5 and baby dropped to a -1 station. I tried to sleep but due to decels after each contraction I had to lay on my left side with oxygen on ALL NIGHT. I got literally 1 hour of sleep between 3:30 and 4:30. They checked me again around 7 or so I think and I was at a 7 at that point so I was excited we were finally getting somewhere. They still didn't expect me to deliver until late morning early afternoon.
Because I had to lay on my left side all night, my epidural started wearing off on the right. I started to feel each contraction in my right hip and it was getting increasingly painful. The nurse talked me into letting the anesthesiologist come back in just to see if they could help. They gave me another dose of the epi and just then my actual ob arrived (I was so lucky she was on call) and decided just to check me. Surprise I was at a 10 and it was time to push!
I started pushing around 8:45. I could hardly feel my contractions anymore so it felt kind of difficult. But my ob was so encouraging for every single push. The nurse said she never stays the whole time and she did for me. Baby was having decels after each pushing session so I had to roll on my right and wear the oxygen while concentrating on slow breathing. That was so hard because I was so out of breath and just wanted to pant. I also could not feel my legs so some one had to lift them so I could grab behind my knees for each push. My poor husband is so squeamish he couldn't hold a leg. He had to stand by the head of the bed and stare at my face or the wall lol. He just would put on my oxygen mask for me and tell me how good I was doing. I had originally said no mirror but my doc talked me into it. She thought it would help me see how much progress I was making. I could just barely see his head and he had a lot of hair. I pushed for so long I started to worry I was running out of time, but no one made a mention of c section and they just kept encouraging me so I felt more confident. Finally on one of my pushes I could tell his head had made a lot of progress. That's when my doctor stated breaking the bed down and saying it was time for him to come out. I was so relieved! Once the head was out she saw he had the cord around his neck once and then she had to guide a shoulder out and there he was! He was born at 11 am.
They put him right on my chest and started cleaning him up. It was hard to see his face because he was so close to mine but he only had a couple cries and was actually pretty quiet. We tried out breast feeding and he caught on quick and I got to look at him a little more closely. He is so perfect and tiny and we are so in love!
My doctor said I did so amazing and she has never had a patient push so hard and keep up the intensity for that long! I only had 1 stitch and two tears near my urethra that she didn't stitch. It was rough yesterday but doesn't really hurt anymore today. I'm super swollen though and just sore and crampy, but otherwise doing well. I'd attach a pic but the app is acting up
