Gender reveal before shower

This is such a shallow question I'm embarrassed even asking but I'm curious if anyone else had this experience. My husband was talking to a woman at work & she suggested not to tell people the baby's gender until after (or at) the baby shower. She said the guests are more likely to get things off the registry if they don't know the gender before while more likely to buy a gender appropriate outfit if they do know. (She ended up with too many outfits for her newborn to ever wear and bought a lot off her registry herself). OBVIOUSLY, I'm grateful for ANY gift anyone is willing to give us, but like I mentioned above, I'm just curious if anyone else experienced this. THANKS :)

Re: Gender reveal before shower

  • Well we were team green last time, but we definitely got most things from our registry.  After DD was born, many of our friends got us cute outfits then because they were so excited to finally be able to buy baby clothes.  Definitely worked out for us.

  • that is actually a really great idea. I think you may very well get more stuff off your registry.

  • It's not gender, it's sex.
  • We did a gender reveal at the shower last time. Everyone gave stuff from the registry, and/or neutral stuff. I really appreciated having neutral newborn stuff, in case we go team green with another one later.

My coworkers also threw me a small shower after the big gender reveal shower, and they bought a bunch of baby boy stuff.

It was the best of both worlds really. I got the registry stuff first, then filled in the gaps with the clothes and towels and other baby boy things.

This was me exactly.  It was a nice perk of being Team Green I would have to say!  It was like a second shower at my house when everyone came to vist her after she was born.  My Aunts and step mom went nutso at Target and it was pink explosion in my house!  Still is matter of fact ;-)

  • I got like 90% of the stuff on my registry and guests knew in advance we were having twin girls. I think it just depends on your circle etc-- some just don't buy from registries and others do. I only got a couple of non-registry gifts.

  • I think that's true! We were team green with all but this one, but I do think people like to buy little outfits if they know the sex. Gender reveal at the shower would be fun!
