Swaddle Me This

So, do you swaddle?
For naps?
At bedtime?

LO is 16 weeks old and I basically never do, and never really did consistently because she always busted out of any kind of swaddle, even in the early days. However, the other night I kept watching her hit herself in the face repeatedly and I swaddled her. She seemed calmer instantly. I just found out from another Mom tonight that they swaddle for naps at daycare (she is there 3 days a week.)

I just swaddled her now as she needs to nap and won't, and she does seem calmer already and obviously can't punch herself in the face like she was just doing over and over (and over and over.)

Thoughts? What does J14 do at 16 weeks? I'm just starving and exhausted tonight and my legs are tired of bouncing her. I wanted her to sleep on me so bad but she thought it was tummy time on my chest instead and then spit up all down my nursing tank. Wait! She's out! Talk to me J14 because daycare may be onto something...

Re: Swaddle Me This

  • We stopped at 10 weeks, however a few days after stopping she decided she would only sleep in her Rock n' Play. So now at 14 weeks we have to figure out how to get her to sleep in her crib. I thought about trying to swaddle again but she rolls around so much that I don't think it's safe.

  • We just stopped swaddling a week ago.  she was learning to roll and i thought it was time.  we moved her to a sleeping sack and she is sleeping the same as with a swaddle.  naps are the same as well.  i personally wouldn't start a bad habit this late in the game.
  • LO will be 3 months Friday and I stopped swadding as of last night. I did put him in the swaddle still but just around his chest and left his arms out so he still felt secure. He was out all night (as usual). Hoping it works again tonight. We never swaddled for naps, sleeps pretty good without it. I just like him to get a really good night sleep at night which is why we swaddle him. He's on a 9 hour stretch at night, and I'm loving it:)

  • 13 weeks. We swaddle for naps and at night. We got a miracle blanket at 10 weeks once he started busting out of the Swaddle Me and it's miraculous. Also, he's 16 pounds and it still works wonders!

  • We swaddled up until a week and a half ago. We were watching a movie, and luckily H heard LO crying over the movie. I went in to check on her, and she had rolled from her back to her belly while swaddled, so she was planted face down, screaming into the mattress. We decided right then and there that we were done with the swaddle. Except for two occasions when she absolutely would not nap without it (during which we kept an eye on her the whole time) she has adjusted fine to not being swaddled.

  • We never swaddled because she seemed to hate it when they did it in the hospital. The nurse would always do it after taking her vitals & LO would protest until we took her out of it. She naps in her rock & play and sleeps in her crib at night.
  • 17 weeks here and still swaddling. We use the Halo Swaddle Sleepsack. She knows once we put her arms thru the sack that it's bed time. We have been swaddling one arm out because she is wanting to roll over but not quite there yet.

I only swaddle at night. During the day I will swaddle if I can't get her to nap.
  • 18 weeks here, stopped swaddling around 14 or 15 weeks. She decided she was done with the swaddle and the rnp in the same week! She's now sleeping in the Merlin Sleep Suit and that's working really well to keep her from startling, but allowing movement.
  • Were the same, but now I'm worried he'll flip! At 19 wks he doesn't move when he's asleep except his mouth to scream when he wakes up.

  • 4 mo yesterday and we still swaddle naps and nights. We don't really 'swaddle' but use a Woombie (LOVE these...baby can't breakout but can still stretch all around!) I'm thinking the next one we get is going to be their convertible where you can leave an arm/arms out. LO can roll but hates being on his belly and sleeps like a log at night...so for the short time being, he's staying in the Woombie!
  • We stopped the swaddles at 1.5 weeks and reintroduced around 4 weeks. He was breaking out of every blanket imaginable and eventually someone gifted us a swaddleme.

We broke them around 12 weeks for good. We never did it for naps. Our naps still suck at 14 weeks and aren't anywhere but in the vibrating bouncer thing. I do get good night time stretches as long as he doesn't wiggle and get trapped against the slats, or realize his paci is across the crib.

We swaddle. We do the halo swaddle for naps, which he busts out of in minutes, so it's really only for the beginning if his nap. I'm hoping that helps when we are ready to transition. We use the miracle blanket for nighttime and occasionally his long nap. He's a very violent thrasher in his sleep. We are thinking of using this if he has a tough time transitioning away from the swaddle at night https://zipadeezip.com

  • 3.5 months here. My daycare also swaddles babe for naps per my instruction using the summer infant wrap sack. She falls asleep much quicker for naps with it. Her crib is in the same room as everything else so I'm not worried about her rolling and them not noticing. Also, she barely rolls during the day and has never really successfully rolled back to front while awake, although she tries and gets pretty close. Her hands are soooo distracting to her as she's falling asleep that I would like them to keep on doing it as long it helps.

At night I don't swaddle, because by the time she finishes her last bottle/nursing session she is basically asleep already.
  • We stopped at about a month. It wasn't helpinganybody.

  • Still swaddling here, just at night. H is 3 months. We have never swaddled for naps. He loves his sleep. He can only roll onto his side from his back for now, and only rolled belly to back twice so I am not too concerned about breaking the swaddle yet. I did try a sleep sack last weekend, and that was a huge mistake. He was up three times after a month of sleeping straight through. He also napped like crap that day and we went to a big family dinner, so he could have been over stimulated and his whole schedule off anyway. He still take all of his naps on me though, which while I love the cuddles, is annoying. I may try his shorter naps in the crib or bouncer again today and then just do the long nap on me.

  • We stopped early (maybe b/w 6-8 weeks).  My little fella would get seriously PISSED if you swaddled him with his arms down and fight until he worked his arms free.  I didn't see the point in it if his arms weren't down.  He sleeps well so doesn't seem to have bothered him at all.

  • @mullenem i'm sorry but I have to ask investigative questions. Must get any helpful information that I can to understand this phenomenon! Do you BF or bottle feed her when you're home from work? Do you have set feeding times or is it kind of go with the flow? How many ounces does she get at each feeding? Do you nurse her/feed her to sleep or do you put her down drowsy? How much does she nap during the day?
  • We still blanket swaddle for naps and use the swaddle me for night time... LO hasn't rolled back to tummy yet, but she has tried, but I'm scared to not swaddle.  Like @mullenem we are getting at least 11 hours of straight sleep from LO... The last time I remember her even having a somewhat bad night was her 2 month shots... she is now 4 months (but we get shots today, so we could have a bad night).  She does not sleep well when she is not swaddled... So yes, while I have been getting some good sleep lately, I am sure it will suck once we break the swaddle habit.  I plan on trying in the next few weeks, but I plan on getting her through shots this weekend and traveling for a wedding next week.  Then we will try!

  • We just ordered the Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit. I paid extra for one day shipping. We will see how tonight goes!!
  • I just ordered a Zipadeezip yesterday and praying it gets here ASAP.  We swaddled as tightly as possible for naps and at night, and she loved it.  She started rolling over back to front (but not front to back) about a month ago and we had to quit, and she hasn't slept since.  I'm really hoping this thing helps.

Let me know if it works for you. We were going to order one when DD was 8 weeks old but they were out of stock. We ended up buying the swaddle up instead and used it for a couple weeks. Now she sleeps in pajamas. Some nights she sleeps 8-10 hours and some nights she's up every 3-4.
  • We stopped swaddling around 9 or 10 weeks - whenever I first noticed her trying to roll over in the crib. Up until that point we swaddled her at night but never really made the effort during naps. Sometimes she'd hang out in a loose swaddle while awake since she liked it. During the day we just used A&A blankets and we used swaddle sacks at night.

Now at almost 14 weeks we just put her in a zip up sleep bag (with a onesie under) at night.

  • She will be 4 months on sat and we stopped swaddling about a month ago. First it was nap time at daycare, then at night also. She has been rolling from back to tummy for 2 weeks now, but so far she has only done it once in her sleep and woke herself up.
  • We swaddled Olivia for maybe a week or two after we came home from the hospital, but her arms were always free (so I guess that isn't technically swaddling her). She never really seemed to care one way or another, so we stopped. She has been sleeping 7 to 9 hours at night since she was about 8 or 9 weeks old.

  • Thanks everyone! My daughter changes over time, at one point swaddling was necessary, then she absolutely hated it, then she broke arms free, then we gave up and stopped completely for weeks on end....we usually sleep in footie pajamas and because daycare swaddles in a light A&A blanket for naps, I just started doing that too, just wrapping her arms and leaving her legs free.

Now she isn't pulling her wub out of her mouth (by accident) or punching herself in the face...and....she has now been sleeping for 3.5 hours in the afternoon. I won't wrap her arms up at night, but so far this is working. I am sure she will change again eventually! She's only just starting to turn to her side, she's more interested in talking. Talking.talking.talking.

How is the sleep suit working for you? Mine should be here tomorrow and I'm anxious to see how it will work in replacing LO's swaddle sack.

  • We've swaddled since day one. DH used to do the straight jacket swaddle but then DD would break free. Now we use Aden and Anais easy swaddle blankets. She can still sometime weasel an arm out the top which then goes straight to her mouth which then wakes her up. We used to not swaddle her for naps but we just started day care last week and found that she sucked at napping without (she'd only sleep for one hour in 20 min increments). So I brought it in on day 3 for them to use it if her naps were sucky and they pretty much use it all the time now. At home she often napped in her swing. She just pumps her arms and legs too much if we don't and will end up waking herself. We tried a qtr swaddle a few weeks back but had to revert back to the full. Thinking about retrying soon tho. DD is 14 wks and does not roll yet.

    Ps sorry for the novel!
