head control

This is probably a stupid ftm question, but I've seen a lot people mention that their LO has good head control already. When I'm burping DS he holds his head up and looks around and when laying on his tummy he holds his head pretty high. How do I know when he can be in a carrier without his head supported? Do you limit the time at first or do you feel like they will lay their head on you when tired? TIA

  • I was one of the ones who said my LO had good head control. I would describe it similar to what you said about your LO. Even though I was using my carrier w/o the infant insert I still feel like the carrier provides some head support. I don't think he's ready to just be carried around w/o any support. Does that make sense? Maybe closer to 3 or 4 months....which is not too far away!

  • Not a stupid ftm question at all!  My kiddo (2 months) has pretty good head control like you described, but I would not consider him able to hold his head up.  With DS #1 I asked the pedi how I would know the baby could hold up his head and pedi said "you'll just know".  And he was right, there was a point at which I just knew DS #1 could hold up his head.  It was about 3-months, which is when most developmental charts indicate this physical milestone is met.

The pedi gently pulls kiddo up by the hands to see head lag, that is what they are using to determine neck strength.  I'd ask the pedi the next time you see him/her to give you an idea of how you can tell when the baby is ready to go neck support free.  He/she can also help you see the difference in your kiddo's neck strength on that test visit to visit.

I would not go without neck support until you are sure your kiddo can hold up his/her head.  They will not lay down on your chest when they get tired as a rule.
  • I know my LO has better control but is not all there. She used to have moments where if I wasn't super careful she could push off of me and throw her head back to the side. Usually if I had her upright after a feeding against my shoulder to burp. Always scared me and hubby.

Now she will turn her head side to side to look at things even when help upright. Still a little bobbing but no sudden or quick motions. I feel like when she no longer bobbles her head or when it doesn't look like it's taking effort she'll be all set!

This exactly for us too.  You'll just notice one day that there isn't any bobbing.

  • We had our 2 month appointment on Thursday and I was so mad I forgot to ask the pedi. Thanks for the help! We went to a Fall Festival today and we used the ergo carrier. I made sure I held his head since we don't have the insert. On a different note, this is the first time I've comfortably worn DS. I've been feeling like a moron for having so much trouble with it so it was a good day!
