Has anyone tried nipple shields for biting?

LO has been biting me. A lot. I'm taking her off when she does it and, while I try to not make a big deal about, sometimes I'm like "ow ow ow" or say "no" loudly because two teeth are trying to puncture my nipple. So now I think she thinks it's a game.

Yesterday I was NIP and she bit down hard. I yelled out a bit and reached under the blanket to delatch her. When I did she made a satisfied grin and then acted like she was done eating. She did the same thing later too so it's either a game to her...or she's a sociopath.

Basically, I don't know that the removing her thing is going to work for us. Has anyone tried using a nipple shield for protection? I really don't want to give up BFing over this and EPing isn't going to happen.

Usually biting is a temporary thing.
When she bites, do exactly like you are doing. Say "no biting" or similar, and end the feeding. If she's latched on properly and eating, she can't bite.

I'd be surprised if she would latch on using a shield if you haven't been using one.

Hang in there....this too shall pass!

  • LO just started biting me too. And hurts like a mofo! And yes when he's properly latched and eating he doesn't bit, but if he stops for a moment he bites. That's the problem. I wish I had advice for you but I don't. I unlatch him and say "no!" Very firm and put him down. He of course just laughs

  • If it's toward the end of the feeding, I would unlatch when you think LO is pretty much finished, before she gets a chance to bite. Also, make sure you don't react too much. Just firmly say " no biting" and end the feeding. If you react too much, she might think it's a game.
