Switching to FF & DC [XP (shortened) from FF Board]

So we're about to transition to formula after 6.5 months of EPing .

The problem I foresee right now with DD, though, is knowing how much to feed and how to send bottles to DC when DD drinks odd amounts. It's just very difficult to tell how much she's going to take in a feed.

Right now I send 4, 4 oz bottles to DC and she usually goes through 3.5-all 4 of them or so.

But her actual individual feeds are all over the place. For instance, yesterday she ate 4 oz, 2 oz, 6 oz, then 3 oz while at DC. Other days it might be 3,2,4,2,3 or any other combination.

My DC will allow us to do whatever we want. We can premix bottles, send bottles with water and they add powder, or just keep water there and add powder r use their sink water and just keep powder there. Or whatever else we decide we want to do. They have a small "dorm sized" fridge where they keep the baby's food/BM/whatever.

How would ya'll send formula in this situation to minimize waste?

Re: Switching to FF & DC [XP (shortened) from FF Board]

  • I sent a can of powder. DD's formula was too expensive to waste (Neocate). They used filtered tap water. I was never picky about the water we used for her bottles.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

  • On the formula board they are suggesting premixing in a jug-this wasn't something that was really done when ds was taking a bottle (1.5 years ago which isn't that long!)
Apparently dr brown has a jug just for premixing formula and then you can apportion formula out without having to make it in the mandatory 2 oz intervals. That sounds pretty cool, but I'm trying to play devils advocate too and think if that's really better than sending a can or not.

I guess the only issue that there may be with that is space-the dc fridge is small-and then of course you need to make sure you don't make too much since it's only good for 24 hours but I do have a sense of what she takes in a day at dc, just not so much how she takes it.

What do y'all think of that?

  • What you just suggested seems to make sense.  You can do the jug, then keep a small can there if your LO eats more on certain days.
We are going to make this transition soon also, so I will be following this thread!
  • What temp does she like it at? I found that refrigerated formula never heated up nicely, so I always sent powder and DS was more than happy to drink it at room temperature. If your DC is willing to measure & mix, I'd just send the can.
  • Oh we are lucky on temp-she eats the pumped breast milk right out of the fridge. I ep right now so she takes everything from a bottle and it's all cold.

  • Before my LO turned one, DC kept a can of formula there (they actually provide it). So much easier. They washed the bottles and kept them there too so we didn't have to worry about carting anything back and forth which was such a relief after 9 months or so of bringing bottles of BM every day.

I don't know if you already started or not, but my son took BM straight from the fridge, but when we switched to formula, he would only take it warmer.  Not sure why, but just something to keep in mind - for that reason, we sent a can of the powder to DC and let them mix it themselves.
  • I second the pitcher idea if there is room in the fridge and you can tell them to make her 2 oz bottles (or whatever amount) every feed and then to pour more as she needs it.  I have to make all of DD's bottles before I get there, but I have water and powder there in case they spill it or they need to make more for her.  They're technically not supposed to make the formula, but they do it in a pinch.  I have also made an extra bottle that they can use to add an extra ounce or two to a bottle if she's still hungry.  For example, LO typically eats 4- 4oz bottles while at daycare.  So I will make 5 bottles and they can use the fifth bottle to give LO more formula if she's still hungry after the 4 ozs.  That might help with the space issue if there is no room for the pitcher.  Good luck!

    NOOOOOO!

Okay we'll keep an eye out for that (we haven't started but we will soon). The good news is DC does have a bottle warmer there and right now they heat bottles for everyone but us.
