Preemies

Arches back & stiffens up

I noticed that my DD has a tendency of arching her back.  She also stiffens up her arms and legs.  She does this a lot.  I haven't asked the doctor about it.  I am just wondering if any of you had this with their preemie.  Did it go away after awhile? I noticed when I hold her it doesn't happen as much.

Re: Arches back & stiffens up

  • Riley was born at 36 weeks so not as early as Kiera but he does that too. I honestly think it just a newborn thing. He tends to do it when he is working on a poop or passing gas. So maybe she is doing the same thing?

PS She is getting SOOOO big! I love your new siggy pic.

  • It sounds like reflux to me!

Also, have you started physical therapy with her yet? They'll tell you about how preemies tend to default to a stretched out position; they didn't get that squished up time in you, so they stretch out... you'll want to work with Keira to teach her to pull her limbs in (flexion)... the Moby wrap was a HUGE help with keeping Max bundled in close when he was tiny... the PT has commented on how well he is developing as far as range of motion and such... and I totally credit all the time he spent in the Moby!

She looks great, and it sounds like you're doing well! I'm so glad~!

  • Taylen arched her back when she had reflux. She was grunting too.
