windwithfingers Birth Story

TL;DR water broke at 5:30am on 9/27, Quinn Patrick was born at 1:54pm on 9/28, 8lbs 7oz, 19.5in, with a 15cm head.

Long version:
Woke up, wondered if this small gush was just discharge, but no, it kept coming. Got back in bed, in denial about. Called OB, was told to lie down for half an hour and see if it happened again. Got up again at 6:10, definitely my water. Woke up my parents, told them my water broke, and my dad's response is "what does that mean!?" while launching himself out of bed.

We get to L&D around 7:30 and I'm admitted right away due to GBS+. Hang around for awhile in triage. Get into a delivery room around 8:30. MIL is not answering her phone, which leads me to believe she's on the tennis court. No big deal. Contractions start and the nurse checks me. I'm 100% effaced and 4cm. MIL and SIL finally show up around 10. I am unhappy to see SIL brought her friend and evict them almost immediately. By this time, contractions are pretty rough. I decide to get IV drugs because I am not as tough as I thought I was. They help for awhile but when they wear off, contractions are starting to make me cry. When MIL is out of the room, I ask for an epidural. It's maybe noon and I'm 5cm.

Epidural comes pretty quick, and then I'm on my back unable to move my legs. I progress to 6cm and then labor stalls. For HOURS. I am contracting and baby's heart rate is good, but I stop progressing. I end up sleeping through the night with no progression, so at 7am, they start pitocin. I feel nothing. Around 8:30, the OB comes in and checks me, says I'm almost complete and we can start pushing soon. So around 9am, I start to push. The OB, who is not my normal doctor, stays the whole time, and there's also a medical student present. It's his first birth and he's kind of wide-eyed through the whole thing.

So I have my mom on one leg and MIL on the other and I'm pushing. MIL is playing coach and it is driving me nuts. She keeps telling me when to take my next breath, how hard to push, etc. I ignore her for the most part and watch the doctor. I pushed for FIVE HOURS because LO was trying to come down sideways and the OB had to wait for an opportunity to turn him. I am losing steam, because it's taking so long, and I feel like I can't do it. But finally, finally, the OB suits up and I can feel her move him in the birth canal. When that happens, he comes out really fast. Delivering the placenta was almost fun compared to that. The only thing that saved me from surgery was that LO's heart rate never dropped once.

My first thought when I saw him was not overwhelming love but "it's about time, dude." They put him on my chest, MIL cut the cord, and he latched on right away. He's a super good breastfeeder. He also looks pretty much exactly like DH which makes me happy and also just terribly sad at once.

He failed his hearing test twice and needed an echocardiogram but he's healthy and precious and has long fingers and toes. He's a really good baby who likes to be held and snuggled. He makes me miss my husband so much though, especially at night when there's no one to hold him while I grab a diaper, stuff like that.

So that's it, the tale of the 33 hour labor. I think I was kind of a rock star in the hospital after that, since all the nurses came to visit. Even one of the veteran doctors looked shocked when I told him I pushed for 5 hours. I can say with authority that I am firmly one and done.
