Winter Coats/Suits....

I am so clueless. Do I need to get these for my little ones arrival in Jan? I can't imagine me taking them outside other then to and from the car. Do I just bundle them in blankets in their car seats or is a coat/suit a must. Thanks!

Re: Winter Coats/Suits....

  • Don't bother with coats and suits , we had cute ones that never got used. We just put them in normal clothes and a hat and put JJ Cole bundle me blankets on the car seats all winter. I'm sure other companies make those type of things they are blanketsyou thread the car seat straps through, and they zip up over the baby very cozy.

  • Just as a general word of caution, but of course everyone is free to do what they want: bundle-mes or anything else that comes between baby and car seat and is not made by the manufacturer of the car seat makes the car seat less safe. Bulky buntings or snow suits are similarly not recommended bc you can't get the straps tight enough.

The safest thing to do is put the babies in fleece sleepers, strap into car seat and then cover w a blanket.

  • I have been reading up on this topic since someone told me about coats and car seats being  dangerous.   I am looking into the cozy covers when out of the car but not sure if they will really be needed since I don't plan on taking them out other than doctors appointments...

  • My DD was a late fall baby. We got a great one at LL Bean and just ordered 3 more for the triplets this year. Couldn't imagine putting a baby in just a fleece sleeper in chicago, but it depends where you live .

  • I never put on coats or covers on my twins. I just made sure they had their hats, socks and gloves on and wore long sleeves shirts and jeans under that. Then I covered them in warm blankets which I bought from carters. Believe me babies bodies heat up faster than adults. And to my surprise they often got heated with just ONE BLANKET! I'd suggest kept it light, because we are indoors most of the time, if we ever step out of the house (restaurants, malls, friends house....) so makes no sense to suit them up. By the way, I recently heard from an infant apparel store that the snowsuits for infants were recalled because of high rise in infant deaths due to these coats.
