Baby gates

Now that DD is crawling, we need baby gates. Our new place has stairs, but one side is wall and the other side is wrought iron banister (pretty thin). Would the pressure mounted gates work for this setup? I don't see a way to drill in if one side has no wall, so I was thinking pressure mounted was the only way I could go. Anyone else have this setup or recommendations?

Re: Baby gates

  • They make adapters for banisters. I just went to amazon and typed in "baby gate for banister" and found a few options. I have not tried any of them, but once LO is crawling, I know I will be needing something for the bottom of my stairs.

  • I have the same problem but on the one side there's nothing

    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • We are looking for a free standing gate! They make some sturdy looking ones, but none that I can find in stores to try out.

We used wood - scrap 2x3 or 2x4 that's at least as tall as your gate and some super strength zip ties (they have the strength rating on the package). Zip tie the wood to the banister and you've got a nice flat surface for your gate to mount against. I also suggest sanding the wood so there's no danger of splinters. I'm painting ours this weekend to match the trim.

Here's one with a thinner metal railing. Looks like they drilled holes through the wood for the ties:

  • @blue_elle‌ Aha, that's a great idea! We have a situation like that bottom picture, so I think I could do something like that but probably just on one rail, because they are angled going up the stairs.
