Middle Names

edited October 2014 in Baby Names
So we decided if we go with Catherine for hypothetical baby #2, her mn will be Mae. We're discussing what mns to use if we just use Kate as her fn. We'd like to use a family name so spelling is significant.

Again ln rhymes with Lettuce.

Ok now this is a little out there, and I do NOT like masculine name on girls, but my late father was named Bradford. Would Kate Bradford be absolutely terrible? I think I've got sentimental goggles on.

Re: Middle Names

  • So the people voting for Kate Bradford like it or think it's terrible? Maybe I should have clarified. Only vote for it if you like it. Haha. Thanks.

  • I like the flow of Kate Emmeline the best. As far as Bradford goes, I like the meaning for you. I don't think it's terrible for the mn spot. I probably wouldn't have the guts to do it though:)
  • I prefer Catherine Mae or Catherine Bradford, nn Kate.

  • Bradford is a nice mn.  I like Catherine better though.
  • Another vote for Catherine. I don't mind Bradford.

In my neck of the woods many mothers honor their fathers by giving their daughters their father's first middle or last name as a MN. I share my grandfather's MN and my BFF has her grandfather's last name as a MN. Neither MN is very feminine, esp my BFF's MN. She and I do have very feminine FNs though.

  • I voted for Bradford because of the significance, and because it lends some strength and weight to a short name like Kate. I've had several girl friends with family middle names (even mom's maiden name) and I think it's great!

Would a double middle name be weird?

    Kate Ellen Bradford Lettuce
    Catherine Mae Bradford Lettuce

    Too much?

  • I really like Catherine Bradford, actually.  Kate is fine too - it's one of the few nickname-y names I don't mind as a full FN.  I don't mind masculine MNs for girls at all if they honor family.

however, please give your baby a full name. I would hate to put Katie or Kate on a resume. Just not professional.

I disagree that the name Kate on a resume would be unprofessional. Katie maybe, but I really don't think that Catherine v. Kate on a resume would make a difference.
  • I think that Bradford is nice, especially for the meaning, but it definitely flows better with Catherine, as some PP said! She can still go by Kate if you prefer to call her that, then can go to Catherine when she is older (if she chooses). For the Kate ones, I think Kate Louise has the nicest sound.

  • Louise is my fave mn option, but if you do Bradford then I would go with Catherine Bradford. It just flows better and sounds more adult/classy to me.

    *holy block quote*

@ramy3‌, I just can't get over the flow issues with our last name. Hypothetical baby #2 (if a girl) will be Catherine, Kate, or Ruby. They're the only names we can agree on out of like every girl name ever. Seriously. My H makes naming children nearly impossible.

I am a writer though, and I'm working on two books right now, so I keep an ever growing list of names on my phone. It's nice to know I can use them in some aspect. ;)

  • My DD's name is Kate (not Catherine). We chose Kate because our last name is just too long and it didn't sound right with our last name. I love her name and have no regrets, but I love Catherine too. Can't go wrong either way! I think Kate Bradford is great.
