Diaper blowouts

DS is 7.5 weeks, about 13 lbs now.  About a week ago, I switched him from size 1 to size 2 Pampers swaddlers, since it seemed like the size 1's were getting a little small and I didn't want to buy another box and possibly not finish it.  A few days ago, he started having poop blowouts out the back of his diaper.  No leaks as far as pee goes, and no blowouts through the leg holes, just the back.  Never had blowouts before this.  Normally I'd think I should go up a size, but I just did! I don't think the size 2's are overly big on him, but maybe I can't get them tight enough?  I guess the issue is when he poops these days, it's usually a large amount with a lot of force less often during the day versus smaller amounts several times a day.  Any experience with this or suggestions?  (I'm sticking with disposables though, just not interested in going the cloth route at this time)

Re: Diaper blowouts

  • No advice, sorry , butI am experiencing the same thing(same sizes, same diapers) but through the leg hole. The poops it happened with were pretty epic though, so I am not sure it's a real problem with the diapers.

  • Yeah the force is strong w this one too ;) I don't think it's the diapers although I have noticed it's happened when I have him sitting on his bum. So if I catch him doing his poop face I try moving him more horizontal lol

  • We had two blowouts yesterday! The size one diapers are still a little too big on him, so we got a small box of newborn size to keep using on him, and while they're a little snug, I thought they would work fine for the next 2 weeks. Both blowouts were up the back and both very forceful. Baby is 7 weeks

  • Lof it's out the back, it's probably more of the force than the size of the diaper. Some people try to get a cloth diaper cover and put it over the disposable to help contain a blowout? but if LO doesn't blow out, you can reuse the cover for multiple changes so it's really minimal laundry. No special detergent because you're not using it for absorbency, just barrier. Changing position definitely helps if you can tell it's coming!!

  • @pmpkn219‌ you are a genius! My bff has been complaining about overnight leakage and I just shared your tip with her and she's excited to try it. I just love how helpful these boards are!
  • LO is 6 weeks and we are using same brand size one. We have had a couple up the back blowouts because I didn't realize the top edge of the back of the diaper got tucked in. Easy to overlook as I usually lift his legs and tuck it under his bum. Learned the hard way :(
  • Thanks guys!  I think it might have been some unusually powerful and large volume poops that got out of control.  That and I had him sitting on my legs facing me when they happened, so the position might have also contributed.  I'll keep the cloth diaper cover idea in mind if it keeps happening regularly...  he's such a stinker ;)

  • I hate blowouts during nursing. Once all over her, on me, and on the boppy.

I love the cloth diaper idea although the extra effort to put it on outweighs the 1-2 times a week blowout for us. If it was happening more often than an intervention might be necessary.

  • My LO has the most blowouts with Huggies and the fewest blowouts with Luvs. Pampers are in the middle I think.

  • It's possible he's between sizes.
