3rd Trimester

Too much weight gain?

Does anyone else feel like they gained to much weight? My doctor hasn't mentioned it so I am not overly concerned but I have gained 40lbs already and I have 2 months to go. I try eating small portions throughout the day, cutting out junk, and drinking water only. I am physically active as well due to having a 3 year old and a full schedule. With my first, I gained weight like this but I felt I was doing better this time around and am just really disappointed, as it took me over 2 years to lose the weight the first time.
Anyone else feeling this way, or think the weight gain suggestions aren't legitimate?

Re: Too much weight gain?

  • I'm in the same boat as you. With my first I gained about 35 total which was more than I was supposed to gain because I was technically overweight. I would eat everything in sight one week because I was constantly hungry and not gain a pound but the week I only ate salads and fruit I'd gain 3lbs. This time around I knew everything would be okay and my body is just different. I'm due next week and just hit 35lbs this week. I started out lower this time around but I'm also more active with my 2 year old DD running around. My OB tells me how much I gain each appointment and in the beginning I told her that I gained more than "recommended" last time and I'm fine with that as long as my LO is healthy and it's not going to impact the health of my pregnancy. She told me I was fine and she was just looking at having to lose the weight afterwards. I'm in the military so getting back in shape is part of my job, but I just want my LO to be healthy and I can run my butt off once he's here.

I would go by what your OB says. If he/she is comfortable with where you are at, then don't stress it. Everyone gains weight differently while pregnant.
THIS. Think of how many different body types are out there! @Nicb13 is totally right that everyone gains differently. The amount you gain will also depend on your body type and what the baby needs, so if you're eating well and staying active, I wouldn't stress about it.

Personally, if it was concerning me, I would bring it up at my next appointment and ask if I should be concerned or making different choices with diet and exercise. I have had many worries throughout my pregnancy that my midwife was able to alleviate with just a short conversation. I'm sure you are doing fine. :)
  • I've gained about 40 as well, and it did taper off in the last month. Don't beat yourself up about it. Everybody is different!

If it makes you feel better, I gained almost 70 pounds with my first and am on track to gain something similar with my second. I gained my recommended 25-ish in the first few months of pregnancy. I'm not going to claim that I am the healthiest eater ever when I'm pregnant, but I don't go crazy either (though Halloween candy season isn't doing me any favors, I'll admit). My body just seems to want to hang on to a bunch of extra weight. My OB with my first and my midwife this time are unconcerned, and my pregnancies have otherwise been very healthy and relatively comfortable/easy. My son was 8lbs3oz, so not an especially large baby.

Also, I was able to breastfeed my first and responded really well to that weight-wise. I was below my pre-pregnancy weight by the time he was six months old without doing any dieting or exercise beyond walking.

Definitely bring it up, but my guess is that as long as your pregnancy is otherwise healthy, it won't be an issue!

  • Lurking here, but I gained 60 lbs with my pregnancy and my OB never even mentioned it. I was 6 months pregnant and random people were like "oh any day now huh?" and my friend was 6 months pregnant still wearing her pre-pregnancy jeans. Everyone gains differnetly and if your OB isn't concerned then you shouldn't be either.

  • I'm at a 40lb weight gain already too, and dread seeing the number hit 200 ... I'm at 190 :( But I also know that everyone is different and my doctor isn't concerned about it. But I do think those "suggestions" are very very optimistic, lol

I really feel like all these recs are pretty relative and as long as you are healthy overall you are fine...
I gained 40lb with my first and by the time she was 9m I was to pre-p shape without any working out, just walking with her.
Similar now though I'n already over 40lb + and have some time to go. But at least in my case - I started a little underweight, so even at 40lb+ my BMI is still in the Normal range, not even overweight, and I still have some Lbs to spare to reach that level... So you can't take those guidelines as absolutes... I do feel like a walking waddling Michelin man but I know I can't really help it much.
