Rear facing?

Do any of you ladies still rear face your babes? I'm looking to buy a new carseat. We currently have DD facing the back, but I'm kind of considering going with a front facing that converts to a booster down the road. I'm apprehensive because I had wanted to keep her RF until around 2, maybe longer. Maybe until she asked me to turn her around...lol...just kidding...but who knows, I can be nuts.

Thoughts?

Re: Rear facing?

  • We planned to turn at 2...however, she is getting heavy, I'm getting bigger and she's a jerk on a car ride longer than 1 hr. I think we might switch this weekend. 20 months is a pretty good run for us.

  • We still have her rear facing and will probably keep her that way til she doesn't fit anymore. Our RF car seat switches to FF, and after that we will get a separate booster seat.

  • Yes. We will be rear facing until they hit 40lbs / 40" tall, whichever comes first regardless of age. If I were buying a new seat for any reason, I'd go with the Graco All-in-One. It has a base just like an infant seat, so that you just have to install the base once and then flip the seat around once it's time - if you have two cars, you have two bases and just swap the seat in and out. I didn't know about them until after we already had seats for the boys.

We will also be RFing until he outgrows our 40"/40lb RFing seat. It could be until he is in kindergarten since he is 30" and 18 pounds.

  • We're still rear facing. DH wants to turn her forward once she turns 2 but I don't want to. I'd like to wait until she weighs more. She's still only like 23 pounds and given that the minimum weight to forward face is 20 pounds, I really want to wait.

  • we are FF since probably 16 months.  I do like that Graco all in one, but we have a Britax Marathon and really like it.
  • We rear face and will be until she is at least 2 and possibly longer. I know people turn them around early and sometimes there are valid reasons for that.  But regardless, it is pretty much indisuputable that rear facing is the safest way for children under 2 to ride.  Again, people have valid reasons for doing it sooner, but they do so knowing the increased risk in the event of an accident.

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • Oh and we have a Britax Boulevard which is very easy to get her in and out of, even in my smallish (compared to some things) car which is a RAV4.

  • We're still RF, and don't have any problems. We will have to FF once DD2 is out of her infant seat, just because of how the carseats fit in the car, but that won't be for at least 9 months.

  • We are still rf. Not sure when we will turn her. She is ok in the car so I don't want to change things

  • Thanks ladies :)
  • BOTH of my girls are still RF.  My 3 y/o is teeny tiny (23lbs & 34 inches) so she hasn't outgrown it yet.  I will keep them RF as long as I can, it's the safest for them.

  • We are still rear facing and plan to stay until he is at least 2, mostly likely longer. We kept dd rf until she was 2.5.

Our state law is rear facing until age two at minimum, so we're still rf.

Edit because bumping with baby is hard

  • RF here until we pass 44" seat limit. (Well, or 45#, but we're already at 34" and only 25# so we're expecting height to hit first.)

  • DS is 33lbs now and quite tall (not sure how tall exactly). He is RF in a Britax advocate in my car. We have a cheaper seat for DH's car since he doesn't go in there often. It has a 35lb RF limit so I'm debating whether or not we should turn him FF in that car soon (Max 2km drive per trip in our tiny town with no stop lights) or buy a second more expensive seat. I know rf is safer at this age, but for the very rare times he goes in the truck (once in the past month), I'm not sure its justifiable and we will continue to just use my car whenever possible and have him Ff on the extremely rare occasion he goes in there.

  • @wineandcake‌, could you just move the nice car seat from your car on the rare occasion that your LO needs to ride in a different vehicle? After the infant seat, we just got one car seat that we move as needed between vehicles (both of our cars, grandparent vehicles, etc). Our Graco (My Size 70? Whatever Target sells) is very easy to move. Just an idea that works for us I thought I'd pass along. Good luck.

Unless the daily use seat doesn't fit in the truck, I'd probably just move the better, bigger rf car seat between vehicles for those rare occasions lo goes in the other vehicle.

But we only have one seat per kid, and I juggle therm into the truck when we do happen to take our truck. ;).
