Early morning wakups

Need some advice. LO used to go down at 6:30p, asleep by 7, and would wake up around 6-6:15am. He needed about 30 min in his bed to wind down. Recently he's been playing in his bed from about 6:30p-7:30p and waking up at 5am. We thought maybe he wasn't tired at 6:30 anymore so we tried putting him down a bit later at 7p. Last night he played in his bed until 8p before falling asleep and still got up at 5am. We are trying to figure out how to get him back to sleeping until 6am as my husband and I both work. We are a bit concerned as well that if we don't fix this now that he will be getting up at 4am after the time change. Any suggestions??

Re: Early morning wakups

  • Babies sometimes go through a period where they wake up early in the morning. If LO is not upset and just talking to himself, then don't respond to him and he will put himself back to sleep. If he is just fussing a little and not crying, wait and see if he will settle himself before responding to him. Unfortunately if he is waking up and you keep responding to him, then this will become a routine. Hope this helps and good luck!

  • He doesn't cry, he just lays in there and talks to himself. We don't get him out of his crib until I get out of the shower around 6:20. But he still wakes us up with his chit chatting and animal impressions. I could turn off his monitor but I'm worried if he actually does cry and something is wrong I won't hear him.

I agree with this.  I'd try leaving him in his crib until 6, as long as he's not screaming/super upset.

  • It could be a phase. LO woke up at 4 am to play for the second day in a row. She's up for almost an hour. The crappy part is she's in our bed during this time. I hope our kids go back to normal soon.

  • We never get him out before 6, but his mornings keep getting earlier and earlier. We respond to him at the same time every day, 6:20

My monitor has a no volume feature, but it still lights up and will beep if he gets loud. I will turn the volume off if LO is actually happy and talking to himself. Usually he will put himself back to sleep, but there have been a couple times when he has woken that it was an hour of talking and playing before he went back to sleep.

  • My LO wakes up between 5 & 5:30 usually for an "early morning feed". I keep the lights off, change her, put a sweater on her because it's usually chilly by then, & feed her. After that she plays around briefly then falls asleep for another 45 min-1 hr. You could always try doing a feed? I dunno though, if your LO is completely happy in there I might just leave him.
  • Do you have any soothing light up/sound toy ??we have this lullaby light up tv looking thing tied to her crib and if /when she wakes up she turns it on herself and sometimes just watches it until she falls back asleep or turns it on and rolls back in a ball and falls asleep to the sound. She's done this at 3 am too if she wakes up randomly.
Might be something to consider , keep him occupied so you can sleep longer. .
