That's pretty amazing! I need details so this can be a future project!
It's super simple. Get a plank of wood at the hardware store (mine is 6' long, 1' across and like 1" thick), sand and stain. I used an acrylic paint pen (got it at Michael's) to make the inch marks, odd inches are 1", even are 2", and each foot is 3". I started at 6" because that's how far I am going to hang it off the ground. I did a bunch of practice rounds on the back, so I had confidence in doing it once, but a lot of bloggers recommend penciling the marks first (I could see my pencil marks through the paint so I didn't do it that way). Some people just use a sharpie too! Then I got Martha Stewart number stencils (Michael's) and used painters tape to secure them to the board, with a foam brush and black acrylic paint I (carefully) brushed over the stencil and removed. The hardest decision was choosing the number orientation (vertical or horizontal like an actual ruler, ultimately I chose vertical so the boys can identify the numbers).
To hang, affix a sawtooth hanger to the back and that's it!
I might do a clear coat over the top to seal it, but I don't know if I want it real shiny.
