Breastfeeding

How many women are able to sleep the night without pumping/bf baby?

I'm really curious because if my baby were to sleep a long stretch overnight, like six hours, there is no way my breasts would last. I would get engorged and get plugged ducts. People say that your body adapts but my baby is four months old and it hasn't adapted. How long does it take to see a change? Is there any good way to train my body to settle down overnight?

It seems like if you are feeding every three hours during the day, that logically the body would just continue this overnight and not know to slow it down. Any thoughts? Thanks:)!

  • You need to not be nursing or pumping for a few days at night before your body will adjust. If baby is sleeping through the night and you're too uncomfortable initially, you can wake up and pump and gradually make that time later until you're at the morning feeding.

  • Both my kids slept through the night by 12 weeks. I successfully breastfed my first during the day until he was 15 months. I am still breastfeeding my second, who is 9 months. Engorgement took about 5 days to relieve each time they dropped a feeding. I hand express into the sink if it really hurts.

  • For me, my boobs would take care of the problem themselves in my sleep, and I'd wake up in a soaked bed. But after about 2-3 days of that, they would stop producing so much.

  • I don't mean to make you lose hope, but my LO is 6 months old, has been STTN since about 10 weeks old, and my boobs still haven't figured it out! I'm starting to think it's because they are so small, that in order to hold the amount of milk my LO will need in the morning, they have no choice but to become engorged. I started out waking to pump and gradually made the length of the pumping session shorter and time later and later, yet I still wake up at about 5am with uncomfortable rocks on my chest. (LO usually sleeps 7pm-6am. I also pump just before I go to bed to empty.) I end up hand expressing into the sink every morning to hold me over for another 1-2 hours. I hope to BF until at least a year and maybe, just maybe, my boobs will figure it out sometime before then. Otherwise I can't imagine how weaning is going to go for me!
