First tri screening?

Anyone have this done? What do the results tell you?

Re: First tri screening?

  • The search feature will help you out with this one. Lots of women are doing this screening I believe. If you have any questions, your OB is the best option for answers.

  • It depends what screenings you are referring to. There are many options for first tri screening depending on your age, family history, and any concerns found on a U/S. It's best to speak with OB to see what screening would apply to you.
  • I was looking for more personal experiences not a Google search but thanks. I understand they test for chromosomal abnormalities. I should have been more clear with the question.

There are multiple types of tests for chromosomal abnormalities.

I have had the NT scan done for my first 2 pregnancies and that is an ultrasound to see baby and take measurements of the fold of the back of the neck, look at the organs, and measure the size of baby.

There is also a simple blood test where they put multiple drops of your blood on a card to be sent off for ananlysis.

The results can give you the "odds" of having a child with trisome 13, 18, or 21 (Down's).

They are not definitive tests - but a high probability of there being a problem would give you options to have further testing done.

There is a materni21 test that also screens for downs and other things - some women here have done that.

there is also sequential screens, quad screens, CVS, and amnio that can all be used.

talk to your OB about what your options are and make your decision soon b/c the window of gestation for the NT scan ends at 13w3d I think.

ETA:  some insurances do not pay for any or all of these screenings.  The NT costs me about $500 out of pocket.  just something to keep in mind.

  • Sorry to hijack this thread, but had a related question. I planned to tell family and friends pending a good report following the NT screening, but just called the office and found out it'll be another 7-10 days until the report comes back. At that point I'll be 14-15 weeks along, which I know is not that much longer but feels like an eternity when I was hoping to share the news on the the u/s date (which is also my wedding anniversary - and an email noting the "its been x years since we were all together and now we have some good news" type of thing was in the plan). Did other people wait for this result (or plan to wait for it)? From the other threads it looked like people were getting feedback on the day of their appointment. (I don't have any reason to be worried, other than just being a bit of a worrier by nature).
  • I just got it done yesterday, mine was at 12 weeks & included the ultrasound with lots of measurements, NT scan, then went down to give a vial of blood as part of the NT scan. they also took my urine for a u-dip (not sure for what)

Mine was covered under insurance, & actually there was no real discussion of whether it's going to happen or not.

  • I had my NT scan on Tuesday, the tech told me the results of her findings at the appointment. I had the Harmony test prior with negatives results, so they didn't take any further blood.
