2nd Trimester

Special Education Teacher Announcing Pregnancy to Class & Parents

My husband and I are due to have our first child in September. I am about to start my 2nd trimester. I teach a class of 3rd & 4th graders with learning disabilities, so some of my 3rd graders will have me again next year if they don't go to another school or different program in the district. I plan on telling both my students and my parents since some of them will be with me again. I made a word search with a secret message and then will read My Teacher is Having a Baby. I want to send a letter home the same day I tell the students but am not quite sure what to say. Does anyone have a letter they sent home I could borrow/edit? Or does anyone have a suggestion of what to say? I would most likely stay out through December and return in January and would work with the substitute over the summer and throughout the few months I am out.

Thank you for your advice/help with this! Wishing you all the best in your pregnancies!
Best of luck

Re: Special Education Teacher Announcing Pregnancy to Class & Parents

  • Congratulations!  I too work in a school and my administrators sent the letter home to parents.  I would double check to see what your school policy is before officially sending it out.  I think the word search idea is so cute! Best of luck.

  • I am a special education teacher for middle school students. Last week I read "Our Teacher's Having A Baby!" and sent home a letter to parents. I basically said that my last day would be my due date barring any unforeseen issues, that I would be out on maternity leave but would be returning just before the Christmas break. I did not mention anything about a substitute since my school doesn't know who my sub will be yet. I also said that I was available to answer any questions parents or their children may have, and that they could borrow the book to read as a family if they would like. Good luck and congratulations! Sorry this was typed on an iPad and the formatting sucks!
  • I work as an aide in a small class with students with autism, some severe, some mild. The teacher I work with has had two babies in the course of his teaching these students (he has had some of the same students for 4 years now). Since he has such close communication with the parents, he emailed them something quick. But to prepare our routine-oriented students, we talked about how he would be gone almost every day over the whole summer (we have extended school year) and he started his leave before school began. Our students handled it pretty well--not sure how routine-oriented your kiddos are, but they needed a lot of prep. The parents understood easily.
I will probably be there next year, so I'll be about one month into the school year before I take time off (probably only 6 weeks--aides don't have benefits). But we'll do the same thing with the kids as we did when the teacher was gone.

  • I am a high school SPED teacher for students with high functioning autism.

I put a note in my syllabus for the spring semester and had a question on my parent syllabus quiz asking if I would be there at the end of the school year. My blurb said "unfortunately, I won't be here to finish UNIT NAME with this class because I am expecting a baby in May. I am aure the long term substitute will do a great job with it and I look forward to seeing you all again in the fall!"

I told my students when I was around 22 weeks when we started the spring semester. I have already had my long term sub come in a few times to meet them so thy can get used to her.
  • Thank you all for your suggestions. My students are mostly ADHD and learning disabilities. I spoke with my principal to get her input and she said to wait till the end of the year to send anything home to parents because a lot of changes will be going on in our SPED department in the district. So now I don't even know for sure if I'll even have some of my kiddos again. Whatever happens I plan on keeping in contact with the sub to make it easier for everyone involved! :-)

    Thanks again ladies!
    Best of luck

  • Thanks for your advice/input ladies! I wound up just sending a letter at the start of the year once I found out who my substitute was.
