No Naps? *UPDATE*

edited October 2014 in May 2014 Moms
DS is five months old today.  Over the course of the last month he has gone from three naps to only two 20 minute naps yesterday and NO naps today. I have tried.everything to get him to sleep but nothing works.  I used to be able to lay him in his drowsy and he would usually fall asleep with no problems.  Now he will just scream until I pick him up.  I don't feel comfortable with CIO until 6 months, so I am not sure what is going on.  I called his doctor's office today and we are going to try a stronger acid med (he has symptoms but Zantac wasn't working) and see if that helps.  I know he is tired because he falls asleep nursing almost every time now and cries a lot by the time evening comes because he is exhausted.  He does sleep all night, and sometimes goes right to sleep at bedtime and sometimes he has a hard time settling down.

I feel bad for him because he is so fussy he's obviously not comfortable, and bad for his older brothers because it's really taking away from the time I can spend with them.  :-(

Any thoughts other than the reflux?  He does have a bit of a runny nose.  No sign of teeth.  Am I missing something?

Re: No Naps? *UPDATE*

  • We've been going through this for about 3 weeks! DS turned 5 months yesterday. I spoke with his nurse that I'm good friends with and she said it's about the time that starts happening. They are so anxious and curious to explore now that they don't want to miss the party. lol yep sounds normal to me. We get 30 min naps after fighting, kicking, screaming, also.

  • Have you tried going for a walk? Get LO to sleep in the stroller or baby carrier?

  • We're closing in on 5 months and he wants to be close to me. He's been tricky getting down at night and early am hours. He wants to lay down on his bed but at the same time wants to be close.

I chalked it up to a big mental and physical spurt as he's trying to roll and grab his toes in the past few days. And object permanence is kicking in.
  • Are you putting him down in a dark, quiet room away from all stimuli? Our pedi says babies are super sensitive to their surroundings at this age and even the slightest distraction can keep them awake.

Could also be that his cat naps during nursing sessions are spoiling his sleep.

  • Mine is doing the same. She's all the sudden SUPER clingy and cries or fusses when put down. She mostly just naps on me but at bedtime she will go down I think she's exhausted at that point. Early in the morning though she is hard to get down no matter how tired she still is.

This is the only way LO has been napping at all. It just started raining buckets here, so I'm thinking we're screwed for her afternoon nap.
  • My LO is in daycare but I've noticed her naps getting fewer and shorter. She was at my moms yesterday and she only napped once for an hour then was up till bedtime. Luckily she wasn't fussy but I know she was tired. I think that makes sense in our situation like a pp said... She does not wanna miss the party at all. Probably developmental.
  • We went through this a week or two ago. Probably lasted for 7-10 days, has only recently resolved itself. She went from 3 big naps to no naps to now taking 2 shorter (20-30 mins) and one long (60-90 mins). I think it's this developmental leap and sudden awareness of everything. She will be 5 months on Saturday and so much is changing!

Hope this resolves soon for you!
  • Update:

Thanks to all of you for your advice/encouragement!  I talked to our pediatrician and considering all of his symptoms he wanted to try another acid reflux med since the Zantac wasn't having an effect.  LO is doing SO much better!  He is back to his normal napping schedule and last night he went right to bed without a single tear.

I do think there is a development aspect to it as well though becuse he is still be much more clingy than usual in the evenings.  I think that along with the pain of the reflux just put him over the edge.  So glad to see him more comfortable.  Hoping he won't have to be on the meds for long.
