June 2013 Moms

~*~ Extended Breastfeeding Check-In ~*~

I borrowed the format from the Breastfeeding board.  I'm curious to see how many June ladies are still breastfeeding, and we haven't had a check-in for a while.

1. How many times a day do you nurse?
2. Are you planning parent led or child led weaning?  Do you have a timeline in mind?
3. Are you nursing at night?  How did you night wean?
4. How does LO ask for nursing?
5.  What's your favorite thing about breastfeeding a toddler?

Re: ~*~ Extended Breastfeeding Check-In ~*~

  • 1. How many times a day do you nurse?  On a typical work day, somewhere a long the lines of 4-6 times.  When LO is having a bad night, it might be a lot more.
    2. Are you planning parent led or child led weaning?  Do you have a timeline in mind?  I'm thinking child led at this point.  If my period doesn't come back by the time we want to TTC again I might have to revisit this though.
    3. Are you nursing at night?  How did you night wean?  Definitely still nursing at night, so no night weaning here yet.
    4. How does LO ask for nursing?  He just asks for more along with the sign for more.  And then tries to pull my shirt up in case I didn't get what he wanted more of ;-)
    5.  What's your favorite thing about breastfeeding a toddler?  I really love the baby snuggles.  It's the only time he really sits still these days, and I really love the cuddles.

  • Thanks for posting!  I need this today

    1. How many times a day do you nurse?
ONE MILLIONBy which I mean on demand evenings and weekends, which has been constant lately.  Her first two molars are coming in, so I'm hoping it's a phase that will pass soon.
    2. Are you planning parent led or child led weaning?  Do you have a timeline in mind?
Could go either way? Maybe a combination?  I know she's nowhere near ready right now, and I don't feel like the horrible struggle that might ensue would be good for either of us. On the other hand, I'm starting to feel the need to set more boundaries about nursing in public or when we have guests, and I would also love to be TTC but haven't had a period yet.  I don't have a timeline or a strategy in mind yet for weaning completely.
    3. Are you nursing at night?  Typically twice over night right now.  I've been okay with this because she's never been willing to drink much milk of any kind out of cups or bottles, and I work full-time--nighttime seems to be her chance to catch up, nutritionally and emotionally. I'm thinking about night weaning in the next couple of months, though, depending on how well she is eating and how easily she responds to dad comforting her at night instead.  This has more to do with wanting to TTC than sleep, because I barely wake up anymore when I nurse at night.  I always thought it would be awful to have a 1-year-old who still didn't STTN, but I've found that it's been really okay for us.
    4. How does LO ask for nursing?  Mostly by reaching her hand down my shirt and/or yelling.  I've been trying to get her to sign, which she's done about three or four times.
    5.  What's your favorite thing about breastfeeding a toddler?  I can tell it's her safe/happy place, and I love to be able to provide her with that comfort and security.  I also love the snuggles.

  • 1. We nurse 4-6 times a day and all night buffet

    2. Child led for now. ;)

    3. We do still nurse at night. Night we an?? ..all the lols

    4. It's just a part of our routine. Sometimes he gets extra fussy and sometimes he grabs at my shirt

    5. I love our snuggles.
  • 1. How many times a day do you nurse?
3-5 We definitely do nap times and bedtime. Usually first thing in the morning too, unless there was a 4 or 5 AM motn session, then I just give him breakfast.
    2. Are you planning parent led or child led weaning? Do you have a timeline in mind?
I am hoping to do child led, but I'm going to rethink that around 18 months if he isn't showing any signs of slowing down because I am hoping to ttc again and still no period.
    3. Are you nursing at night? How did you night wean?
Up until this week it has been 2 times a night. However, a couple days ago he slept through until 4:30, nursed and was up for the day (ugh!) and last night he made it all the way until 5:30 (much better but still early). So I think he might be getting better at the sleep thing.
    4. How does LO ask for nursing?
Honestly we mostly just nurse before sleeping times so I can usually just tell he's getting tired. Once we are in his room and he knows we are going to nurse, he starts diving at my boobs. We haven't really needed to NIP for a long time, but I'm also careful about gettig him home for those precious naps as much as possible. If I cut him off before he's ready, he will sign more.
    5. What's your favorite thing about breastfeeding a toddler?
The snuggles and being able to stress a little less about how much he eats and drinks, especially if he's not feeling great.

  • 1. How many times a day do you nurse? 1-3. depends on his mood! Weird fact: I've only been nursing on one side for 3 months. Haha. He preferred one the whole first year and one produced more so I just figured I'd stop forcing Wonky on him (I named them Wonky and Wonder based on their abilities!)
    2. Are you planning parent led or child led weaning?  Do you have a timeline in mind? I don't have a timeline but DH kind of wants this to be done. He's supportive but I think it's starting to weird him out since Lo can be so demanding about it in public. DH said he doesn't want this to be like the movie Grown Ups. Haha. And personally I presumed it would be more of a private thing in his nursery by now but it isn't.
    3. Are you nursing at night?  How did you night wean? I nurse before bed but not overnight. I just stopped offering but honestly he finally started sleeping through the night without it around 12 months on his own because I'm too lazy for any action or training plan.
    4. How does LO ask for nursing? First he walks up and pulls on my shirt if he can reach me and tilts his head back with his mouth open. He says "booooobie" or I ask "milkies?" and he responds with "uhhuh!" and a nod. So yeah, he's pretty obvious.
    5.  What's your favorite thing about breastfeeding a toddler? Snuggle time. I also get to sit for 5 minutes. Oh the luxury!
