Breastfeeding

Need help or support

My LO is 15wks and we had been doing great EBF from day 1. Last week, I noticed he started getting fussy and not going down after his night feed (right before bed) until he got a little extra from my freezer stash. After that, he started getting fussy during the day and easily distracted from the breast. Nothing calms him down until he gets more to eat. So I started thinking it was my supply. After a feed, I only get about 1 to 1.5 oz total from both breasts, so I know he's draining them.

I'm currently pumping after each feed during the day and last feed (around 9pm)..and then pumping at 11pm before he gets his MOTN feed at 1-1:30am when we move to bed. At night, we don't seem to have any issues. I'm also drinking 4 cups of Milkmaid herbal tea and anywhere from 6-9 homemade lactation cookies a day.

I was hoping to hit the 1 year mark with him....and here I am at not even 4 months. I asked this over at Breastfeeding Mama Talks on FB...but the only thing I got was pump more and that it's a growth spurt. :/

  • Is there a reason you're pumping after a feed? That sounds like a lot of work and way too exhausting! I don't really know, but is it possible that you're pumping so much that your baby isn't getting enough milk because you're pumping it?

I don't think at all that your body is failing you. My DD went through a really fussy stage from 6-8 weeks and I was convinced she was hungry and not getting enough. Just like that it was over and she went back to being her usual self.

It is not possible to run out of milk, you always have it. OP it's mostly likely a growth spurt. Best thing to do is just nurse through it.

Right--I should clarify, sorry. I just mean that perhaps let-down is slower if there less milk?  I notice when I pump after a feed my let-down takes longer than when I pump at work. I assumed it was because my breasts are more full when I pump at work.

  • Try feeding in a dark quiet room. It could also be teething is making him more fussy.
