Crib bumpers: Pro or Con?

I am currently 13 weeks pregnant with our first baby. We are back and forth on how we want the nursery, so I was wanting to know yes or no on crib bumpers? I've read what the AAP recommends and they say it's a bad thing. But I want experienced opinions. Have you had any trouble with them? I think that they add a nice visual effect but do you recommend them for safety reasons?

Re: Crib bumpers: Pro or Con?

  • No need and they aren't safe.  Never had a problem with my kid getting stuck in the slats so I've never wanted breathable bumpers either.  Safety before looks!

  • Well my kid was absolutely getting stuck inthe slats and FREAKING OUT so Yes I got them. I was super anti bumper before she was born, but then life had its own ideas and the bumpers worked for us. We put them in when she was about 2mo I think. Nothing to do with looks, so if that's your only reason for wanting them, I would probably skip that and save the money.
  • I honestly don't think bumpers are the cause of SIDS, but after hearing all the warnings against them, I decided to skip buying one just so I wouldn't have one extra little tiny thing to lose sleep over. Once my son started moving around real well, however, he was constantly getting his arms and legs stuck in the crib slats, so we ended up borrowing a bumper from my mom, who raised babies in a time before they were considered evil.
  • Pro:
    Looks cute

    Con:
    Increased risk of baby dying

No bumpers in my house. We didn't use them for DS, and won't for this baby either. Not worth the risk.

  •  I did use one for my boys, who are my older kids, because it came with the set at the time. I did not with my girls, whose set didn't come with one-and they never got anything stuck in them and I didn't miss it.

So I won't be using one, it's just one more thing to wash and possibly a hazard.
